About this product

Product Information

The good news is that most soldiers are loath to kill. But armies have developed sophisticated ways of overcoming this instinctive aversion. And contemporary civilian society, particularly the media, replicates the army's conditioning techniques, and, according to Lt. Col. Dave Grossman's thesis, is responsible for our rising rate of murder among the young. Upon its initial publication, ON KILLING was hailed as a landmark study of the techniques the military uses to overcome the powerful reluctance to kill, of how killing affects soldiers, and of the societal implications of escalating violence. Now, Grossman has updated this classic work to include information on 21st-century military conflicts, recent trends in crime, suicide bombings, school shootings, and more. The result is a work certain to be relevant and important for decades to come.

  • Growl!

As a young soldier I was told to read this book by my chaplain. It not only opened my eyes to what I was, but what I wanted to be! It also helped me deal with sheep as a sheep dog. It is one of those books you can take as much of or as little as you like. The more you think about and ponder on what he has written the more things seem to make sense. I highly recommend this book to any one who has a loved one or close friend in the Sheepdog community, I had my fiancee read it to help her understand some thing's that confused her about why I am the way I am. I have also read his other book On Combat, and rate it just as high! A great author and a great book!

  • An outstanding learning experience

An outstanding book for anyone that may encounter violence in their life. As a former soldier and a concealed carry permit holder. This book answered some questions from my past and helped to prepare me for any altercation in the future that may require the use of terminal force. The book is written so that both a scholar or layman will understand what is being professed.I purchased from a recommended reading list and read the entire book in 2 evenings. It is compelling and direct, it may offend some readers because there is no sugar coating about the topic of discussion. I would recommend this book to any law enforcement or military prospect. Also those that carry a firearm daily or anyone already in either profession.

  • Dynamic author....leading expert in his field...a MUST READ!

An absolute Must Read by the leading expert in the field of warfare in our society today. A dynamic man, ON KILLING was hailed as a landmark study of the techniques the military uses to overcome the powerful reluctance to kill, of how killing affects soldiers, and of the societal implications of escalating violence. Now, Grossman has updated this classic work to include information on 21st-century military conflicts, recent trends in crime, suicide bombings, school shootings, and more. The result is a work certain to be relevant and important for decades to come.

  • A must read for warriors

Excellent discussion on a topic often neglected in both psychology and popular culture. Instead of approaching the topic of killing as an ugly defect in human behavior, Lt. Col. Grossman presents the fact of human beings killing other human beings for what it is, something that has existed since the dawn of our history. Grossman's thoughts are at times profound and his illustrations of man's behavior as it relates to the killing/refusal to kill are enlightening. In short, a very impressive read on human behavior when it is faced with life or death.
