Drop-in replacement for older mercury-containing batteries

I have a couple of older, 70s era photography devices (a light meter and a 35 mm camera) that used the now unavailable PX-13/PX-625/MR-9 batteries, which were very good batteries but their mercury content forced their discontinuation. These older batteries had a fairly unusual voltage, 1.35 V, (and shape) so it isn't easy to find a simple, straightforward substitute. This WEIN cell is a direct, drop-in replacement and works well. These are referred to as "zinc-air' batteries and if stored unactivated have a long shelf life. Once activated they apparently will be usable for about a year. There is apparently a more expensive solution that involves an adaptor that can then be used with a specific silver oxide cell and together they will duplicate the PX-13 batteries; some people may find that ...

  • Top critical review

After installation, the camers did not respond.

the battery did not work. I put it in the camera and - nothing!.. I do not know if the battery is the problem or if my very old - hasn't been used in a long time. I gave it a 3 star but I truly do not know if it was the battery or an old camera. I plan to take it into a local camera store and determine the problem. If they tell me the battery is A-OK, I'll update this evaluation.

  • Only Viable Mercury Battery Replacement

Many cameras from the the 1960 and 70s were designed for 1.35v mercury batteries, which are no longer available. Common alkaline cells have a declining voltage, starting at 1.55v and ending at 1.3v. This can cause problems with the building exposure meters. Wein cells produce a constant 1.4v that is close enough for almost all vintage cameras, including mine. It is a comfort knowing that I can get a working substitute. The only negative is short life, around 6 months.

  • Wein cels have improved with time.

Wein cells are well-known products which have improved through the years. Used to be that a Wein cell lasted a couple of months at most, but now they hold out for much longer - up to a year in low-draw devices. They require no "re-calibrating" for meters and cameras.

  • Positive terminal cap tolerance issue

The positive terminal of the Wein cell I received is slightly depressed so it doesn't create full contact within the battery compartment terminal. I have to add and create a small piece of aluminum foil and to compensate the small gap but otherwise the Wein cell provides the necessary voltage to work on my Canon F1.
