Product Information

Directed by Hironobu Sakaguchi (who also created the best-selling series of video games that inspired the film), the groundbreaking FINAL FANTASY, which stars a startlingly lifelike cast of animated characters, is the first photo-realistic computer-generated feature film ever made. In the year 2065, Earth has been taken over by a race of alien phantoms and transformed into a barren wasteland sprinkled with dome-enclosed barrier cities--the last remaining bastions of human civilization. Dr. Aki Ross (voiced by actress Ming-Na) has teamed up with Captain Gray Edwards (Alec Baldwin) to search for the "eighth spirit," a powerful entity dwelling in an unknown life form somewhere on the planet. It holds the key to perfecting a system of energy waves that will neutralize the phantoms. Ross's opponent is the reckless General Hein (James Woods), who is determined to put a stop to the alien invasion by firing a satellite cannon directly into a nest of phantoms located deep within the Earth, even though this could mean obliterating the planet itself and all life upon it.

    Unique tale uniquely told.

    Contrary to what the critics tell you, this really IS a story well-told. Square Pictures went bankrupt telling this story due to the complexity of the CGI done (it was very far ahead of it's time and is still, by current standards, pretty amazing). The story is complicated and, generally, the public don't like complicated - they also don't like stories that seem, in essence, to be of an environmental nature as many have stated about the story line. HOWEVER, sometimes a complicated story is a good one and, in this case, it is. Also, the "environmental" issue at hand seems to be more of spirituality (NOT religious in nature, mind you) than an environmentally preachy film like Ferngully or the abomination Happy Feet. Overall, I recommend this release and think, if you are a sci-fi/CGI ...

    Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within

    I received a PSP as a gift and was looking for movie that I thought I might enjoy that was available as a UMD (the format used by the PSP). I bought this movie after seeing the quality of the animation in a comercial, I also knew that the movie was based on a game and that it was a Sci-Fi movie. I enjoyed the movie very much. At times it was easy to forget that I was watching an animated film because it was all so lifelike. The story line was not terribly deep but still interesting; the use of recognized actors for the voices was a definite plus. I suspect I'll watch the movie a couple of more times just to be able to take in all of the great details in the animation.

    Very impressive CG. The game Final Fantasy does not have to be played in order to understand the plot.     Awesome movie!

    I had never played Final Fantasy until a couple of years ago and I am saddened that I had missed out on it until then! I owned a Super Nintendo when I was little but always played the Mario games and never tried these. I highly recommend you play it and own it but I will warn you it's very addicting!

    The title is like some kind of sick joke...

    This has absolutely NOTHING to do with final fantasy as a series. That being said, I still enjoyed the story, it's something that any fan of science fiction would enjoy.
