FANTASTIC PLANET is Rene Laloux's bizarre, enthralling adaptation of Stefan Wul's allegorical science-fiction novel. The eye-popping underground sensation was also a critical success, winning awards at several prestigious film festivals (most notably, the Grand Prix in 1973 at Cannes). Set on the planet Ygam, the film depicts a world in which Draags--a gigantic race of blue alien beings--run the show. Their pets are human beings--or, as they are known in Laloux's world, Oms--who are mistreated by their devious owners. Fed up with the abuse, one Om organizes his brethren and stages a mutiny that will forever change life on Ygam.Laloux's film blends 1960s ideologies with 1970s technology to create a work that profoundly impacted animators all over the world. In creating a troubled universe dominated by the soulless, conformist Draags, FANTASTIC PLANET rejects that notion and embraces the concept of individuality. A troubled political climate forced Laloux and fellow collaborator Roland Torpor (screenwriter of Roman Polanski's 1976 thriller THE TENANT) to relocate to Paris from Prague in order to finish the film. Fortunately, they were able to do so, leaving audiences with this startling animated achievement.

    Very original and imaginative imagery and technology is the tour de force in this remarkable surrealistic film.

    Freaky Past

    This a great blast from the past. If you are a sci-fi fan and like animation then you will want to check this out. The quality of the animation and the English dialogue is questionable but the story is cool and the sci-fi is good. I had seen this when I was a kid, I liked it then I liked it now. Humans have destroyed their civilization and now find themselves the pet and pests of a technologically advanced giant race. The aliens do not see the humans as more than animals.

    Truly Fantastic Psychedelic Experience.

    This movie truly is fantastic... One of the best cinematic experience I have yet to see; and I've seen a LOT of films! An amazing psychedelic audio/visual journey, with a finely crafted story. I recommend you read the classic novel by Stefan Wul on which this is based!

    I LOVE this film

    This is an awesome futuristic movie about aliens that treat humans like pets. It really makes you think, the soundtrack is great, and the animation, although over 30 years old is amazing. I highly recommend it! NOT FOR KIDS.

    Beautiful and extremely relevant

    This film is a 5 star just for the art but when you mix in the story that you can easily relate to todays time...it's just brilliant
