The treatment -- coating -- whatever it is, is so thick the smaller bells won't even ring. They are as dark as chocolate chips, which is exactly what they look like. I'm afraid a child might try to eat one! They are definitely not child-safe. The larger 1" bells are good ringers, but again, the "rust" treatment is over-done.
