    Fascinating information, beautifully written.

I learned so much about mosses, the creatures that live in and with them, and our inter-relationship, in a narrative that was compelling, inspiring and entertaining. I hope to read more from this author. This is the best book on nature I've ever read.

  • An intimate look at moss.

This book does for moss what 'Eats, Shoots, and Leaves' does for grammar. It is a whimsical yet very educational narrative that explores the intricate lives of moss. Robin Kimmerer is so passionate about moss that it shines through in her writing. I am not sure if it is her Native American outlook on all things soft and green or if it is just her writing style, but she is able to successfully highlight those elements that we humans have in common with moss. The funniest has to be the hairstyles of a certain strain of moss. To find out more you will just have to read it to see what I mean. I am a naturalist interpreter for a temperate climate rain forest in Oregon. We have moss everywhere. I used to just think it was pretty and pretty hard to name or explain. After reading this book, ...

  • A joyfully well written personification of the forest floor. Beautiful!

I am a bit of a novice moss grower, and consider myself a hobby naturalist. In my search for information on cultural techniques of growing moss indoors, I came across this book. It is in no way a "how to grow moss" book, but it is absolutely beautiful. It enlightens the reader as to the story of moss, how it survives and adapts and its role in the larger ecosystems. It is the story of the forest through a hand lens. It is NOT a dry science book. Detailed information is delivered through personal experiences with beautifully descriptive language and interconnected stories. It is a series of essays that truly personify the forest floor and the inhabitants that dwell there. The author is honestly passionate about moss, and her joy oozes with every sentence. I can't say enough about how much I ...

  • A beautiful telling, by a steward of the land

The author was interviewed by Krista tiibbit on a recent PBS program "on being" and I was swept away by her love of nature and protection of the land. This is her evident in her book and will get you to compare your own outlook of environment protection. Amazing. .

  • Gathering Moss

Beautifully written. The author is a biologist, specializing in mosses, and incorporates her spiritual values as a Native American.
