About this product

Product Information

DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK is John Ford's first film in Technicolor (which recently perfected far richer shadings of color than had previously been possible), and the director uses it to stunning effect. The film stars Henry Fonda as Revolutionary War-era farmer Gilbert Martin, who, in 1776, has returned with his well-born wife, Lana (Claudette Colbert), to his rustic cabin in the increasingly dangerous Mohawk River valley. At first unaccustomed to the harsh physical challenges of frontier life, Lana adjusts to the work at hand and is soon able to help her husband in the fields. Shortly after they learn that the colonies are at war with the British, their farmhouse is attacked and burned to the ground by a party of Tory-led Indians. The feisty Widow McKlennar (Edna May Oliver) provides temporary shelter for the couple, but it's only a matter of time before the Indians launch a more brutal assault. Save for THE QUIET MAN, DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK contains the richest passages of pastoral imagery in Ford's entire canon, the visual beauty nearly upstaging the spectacular and terrifying Indian battles. The performances, particularly Oliver (who garnered an Oscar nomination) as the vinegary widow and the superbly stoic Fonda, enable Ford to again demonstrate the heroism and limitations of rugged individualism. The scenes of an Indian prisoner spread-eagled on a wagon and Gilbert's escape are repeated almost exactly in the 1982 dystopian classic THE ROAD WARRIOR.

There was a problem at the Post Office with this item initially. Seller went well beyond the call of duty to replace the item and make sure I was satisfied. Good communication, good price, product as described. I feel confident you will be happy dealing this seller. Note: my ratings on shipping time are good because the delay was not his fault, and he did everything in his power to rectify the situation.

  • Almost made it to 5 outta 5

It is a strange truism about films concerning American History. While some of those films dealing with the Civil War are great (THE GENERAL, GONE WITH THE WIND) or highly respectable (THE RAID, GETTYSBURG, GLORY), this is less true about films about the American Revolution. It's a sad or mediocre commentary. D.W.Griffith's first great feature length film was the controversial - pro K.K.K film: THE BIRTH OF A NATION. No matter how you hate the film's racism, it's innovation make it a film landmark. But his attempt at a Revolution film, America, was a flop. Just see the titles: America, THE HOWARDS OF VIRGINIA, THE DEVIL'S DESCIPLE (slightly better due to its star cast, especially Olivier as "Gentleman Johnny" Burgoyne), JOHN PAUL JONES, LAFAYETTE, REVOLUTION. There are two exceptions. The ...

  • 100% Sheer Entertainment!!

One of the few good, family oriented movies about the Revolutionary War and in particular the Frontier campaigns. A very young Henry Fonda and John Carradine for those of us who remember these bigger-than-life stars. Was never a much of a fan of Claudette Colbert but she shines in this movie. Quality of restoration is quite good but you can tell where the camera switches from daylight to artificial lighting. Sort of a very minor "3-d" color shift. Particulary noticeable on larger screen HD TV's. Used to watch these old movies on snowy evenings and frigid weekends in Michigan when I was 10 or so and this is a special treat for all classic movie buffs! You can't go wrong with this movie. Not 100% historically correct but ABSOLUTELY 100% entertaining, first viewing, second viewing, and ...

  • Drums Along the Mohawk

The main selling point of Drums Along the Mohawk for me at least, is the director, John Ford. He's the reason I bought it and the big reason for watching it more than once. Drums Along the Mohawk is the third in a string of wonderful films Ford directed from 1939 unril the beginning of the war. It's his first film in color and for a director with such a great visual sense that alone is a reason for viewing it more than once. Another big reason is that Drums Along the Mohawk is an exciting movie and a great entertainment. Finally, unlike a previous reviewer, I don't believe that the lack of Oscar victories means much so far as the quality of a film. There's many Oscar winners that are forgotten today while overlooked pictures from the same year are loved and enjoyed and will be ...

  • Drums Along the Mohawk

Wonderful novel. Well written with well-drawn characters and an excellent feel for the period. Every American should read this novel to experience what it was like during the American Revolution era. Highly recommended.
