In mid-19th-century Alberta, young Running Fawn's world of beauty and serenity is disrupted by the violence of white settlers stealing Blackfoot lands. Her tribe is placed on a reservation where increasing harshness of life force her to make a choice between the old ways of her people, the man she loves and the white man’s religion. Now she questions her ability to adjust to this new life. She loves her Blackfoot tribe's way of life - especially returning to their winter camp every year. But with the arrival of the white man, with their diseases and guns, it has resulted in the elimination of the life sustaining buffalo herds and leaves her people with little choice but to move to the Reserve. Her life changes even more drastically when she is sent to the mission boarding school, where she learns about the white man's God. Although Running Fawn slowly resigns herself to life on the reservation, she struggles fiercely with the strange beliefs of the Christian missionary who has come to live and teach among her tribe. But Running Fawn is reluctant to give up the religion of her own people and questions if this foreign God is really for her, too? Because of the strength of Running Fawn's convictions about the corrupt nature of the settlers and Christianity, I find that her conversion rings false.
