    BEAUTIFUL COLTRANE

    A 1961 release recorded when Coltrane was moving away from hard-bop and closer to free-form compositions, just prior when he was getting experimental. It featured pianist McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones as drummer working with Coltrane for the first time, and Steve Davis on bass. If "A Love Supreme" and "Blue Train" are the saxaphonist's best albums, then "My Favorite Things" has to rank a close third. This is definitely a jazz classic. Best tracks are the nearly 14 minutes of "My Favorite Things" from "The Sound of Music" with Coltrane on soprano saxophone and a lengthy uptempo version of "Summertime" with Coltrane switching to tenor sax. "Everytime We Say Goodbye" is a beautiful ballad and the last piece, "But ...
