Another rendering of the timeless ballet classic.
This is a very good DVD of the timeless ballet classic "The Nutcracker". It is ideal for children who may be seeing the ballet for the first time, because it shows the young dancers in the cast (the mice and some of the other supporting dancers are children) preparing their make-up and getting into their costumes and thus presents them as real people; otherwise, the "darker" characters like the mice may be a little scary for younger children. The cast is relatively unknown, from I believe the Slovak National Ballet, and the costumes and staging are not up to the spiffier productions available on DVD (such as the famous Baryshnikov version, now nearly 30 years old but going strong), but the production as a whole is charming and well-done. I think that viewing it with him twice before the actual performance and explaining some of the characters and scenes enabled him to sit through the entire live performance without much fidgeting, and allowed him to appreciate it more. For anyone interested in collecting different performances of "The Nutcracker" on DVD, this would be a nice addition. It's the full performance, not truncated, and the music is, as always, magnificent. The price was extremely low, something like $2, and with shipping the cost was still under $10, so a low-cost way to introduce this ballet to your family.

love having this
I love having this ballet on dvd and being able to share a family tradition with my children. Since we can't go see The Nutcracker every year, as I did growing up, this dvd is very special to me. The Nutcracker is a very important ballet for any person to see, but it is especially important for kids to see. It can open a whole new world up for them and they can see that the ballet isn't just for boring adults. The only thing I didn't like about this production is that it was done in Europe and their picture is a little different, for those of you familiar with the BBC tv movies, it is done in that fashion. I still love it!I love having this ballet on dvd and being able to share a family tradition with my children. The Nutcracker Ballet (2002,DVD)
I saw the ballet in New York many years ago. At that time you could not only get tickets, but they cost uch less than $300.00. My daughter takes my grandchildren to New York for the Christmas Holidays and cannot get tickets to the Nutcracker. Therefore, I decided to buy them a DVD, so that they may enjoy something beautiful, sexless, and designed for holiday viewing. I haven't seen the DVD as yet, nor have they, but I'm expecting quality entertainment for myself and my grandchildren.I saw the ballet in New York many years ago. An different kind of Nutcracker movie.
This movie is a bit different. It in a way scared the students who watched it as the beginning was strange.
