As a powerhouse capable of helping you multi-task to the extreme, the Intel Core i7-860 Quad-Core Lynnfield processor features four cores and eight threads with additional embedded features. This quad-core processor offers a base clock speed of 2.8 GHz with a maximum turbo boosted clock speed of 3.46 GHz. In order to improve the i7 series of microprocessors, Intel has created a different kind of architecture. Thanks to the Direct Media Interface technology, the i7 microprocessor provides increased bandwidth between the different CPU components. The four cores can reach their maximum potential, and the microprocessor ultimately gets more instructions per clock cycle. The Intel Core i7 microprocessor is tailor made for CPU-intensive tasks like video editing and gaming. Modern video games require thousands of high-speed calculations that processors with lower specifications would struggle to cope with. For their i7 family, Intel worked closely with Crytek, the developers of the hit Crysis and Far Cry series. They worked to ensure that the microprocessor can push advanced physics and artificial intelligence in real-time while maintaining a consistent frame rate. The i7 processor also improves DVD encoding speeds so that editing and sharing your high-quality media is easier than ever before. It can do all of this while running highly threaded software, such as virus protection, in the background.The Intel i7 microprocessor operates on a 64-bit instruction, with an LGA 1156 socket to connect to the motherboard. It has a 2.5 GT/s (Giga transfers per second) bus speed that can transfer more data between the CPU's component than previous processors. The i7-860 also has a Smart Cache capacity of 8MB. Smart Cache improves the allocation of resources based on workload, thus increasing the amount of available RAM. The Intel Core i7 enables two channels of DDR3 1333 MHz memory to deliver high-quality results for data-intensive applications. It has a maximum memory size of 16 GB, with up to 21 GB/sec bandwidth.The Intel i7-860 also contains several standard and enhanced features for optimal performance. The Execute Disable Bit technology, for instance, reduces exposure to viruses and malicious codes. Enhanced SpeedStep will automatically adjust the processor's voltage and core frequency, thus decreasing average power consumption and heat production. Turbo Boost allows the microprocessor to run up to 133 MHz faster when it's operating below power/thermal limits. The processor's virtualization ability enables several operating systems to run on the same machine without taking any performance or compatibility hit. Hyper-threading enables multiple threads to run on each core. This makes the most efficient use of the processor's resources and improving multi-tasking abilities. Hyper threading nearly doubles the output of the four-core design. Additional enhancements that improve the processor's functionality include vPro for aiding in video production and Trusted Execution for safe data transfers. Intel's powerful 45nm quad-core design reduces power consumption and noise by improving efficiency and optimization. It consumes approximately 95 watts of power.

    I feel good about this purchase. Would buy from again. If for no other reason than just because it did Not arrive DOA as has happened in the past.

    Okay. I just wanted to go newer on my MB and this was one choice. It does seem to be a little bit slower than the i5 3.2mhz that was in it however, I was beginning to doubt a safe boot every time. The difference is noticeable but not too bad compared. Have new ram on the way. Also looking into overclocking this i7 but because it's out of support the apps I'm finding also do not support it any longer. It's a Dell and I do not have access to all the bios settings I see on YT. Still looking.

    Intel Core i7 I7-860 2.8 GHz Processor

    This processor is very fast. I have been using it for almost 3 weeks now or practically a month now and so far no I have not had any problems. This thing apparently has EIGHT processing cores, which I didn't know about while I was using it. I like how it even has the built-in turbo boost, feature. No software installation or computer knowledge is needed for the turbo Boost feature, it built right-in, just monitoring software (if needed). By the way, the turbo boost from what I have seen, can go up to about 3.48ghz and down a again during several seconds , while in use. THIS CPU IS ABOLUTELY AWESOME. Plays Fallout 3 and other intense video games, a hell of a lot better than previous built processors made by Intel. It very efficient in regards to computing power. If you were to take the ...

    Core i7-860 Processor

    Installed easily, worked perfectly, and is very fast for an older processor. Built my sister a better desktop than she has. Installed ii in an older MSI H55M-E21 motherboard (spare board), and was very surprised at how quick it is. Completed the system build, and checked the Windows Experience Index (Windows 7 - 64bit) rating as 7.4 out of a max of 8.0. Very pleased!

    Great Deal, blazingly fast!!!

    This is an amazingly fast chip. The combination of Hyperthreading and a faster Turbo Boost makes this chip faster than the Core i7 920 in most benchmarks. The differences are especially stark single-threaded applications because the 860 regularly runs at 3.33 Ghz in single-threaded apps yielding a 15-20% increase over non-turbo mode. That means - for regular desktop and game usage- this chip will crush the 920 since most apps are at most optimized for dual-core setups. In addition, 1156 socket motherboards are $50-100 cheaper than 1366 motherboards. I upgraded from a Core 2 Duo 2.0 Ghz chip and the difference is incredible. I've included some benchmarks below.     Excellent CPU. Great multi-tasker. Not for hard OC'ers

    I choosed 1156 setup, only because it supports faster memory(1333) and much more energy efficient copare to 1366 CPUs. 1366 CPUs support only 1066Mhz, but tri channel memory, which is much better for things like video editing/encoding and 3D rendering(maybe). So if you are a gamer and need a PC to browse online, play video games and watch movies, get Intel i5-750 and spend $100 more for video card (hd 5850 should do it). However, the I7-860 has 4 cores/8 threads, 4.8GT/s (i5-750 performs at 2.5GT/s (as far as I know), has 4 cores but only 4 threads) - so i7 - 860 is a better multi-tasker and only like 10% slower compare to his bigger brother i7-870 which is almost twice $$. I am runnig this CPU for a week now - no cons so far at all.
