    A Bargain Macro Lens of the Highest Quality

    One of Nikon's best macro lenses, the 55mm AI (and pre-AI) f/3.5 lens is still great adapted to mirrorless cameras either full frame or APS-C. Results with my Fuji X-T3 are outstanding, especially with an M2 tube for 1:1 imaging -- or using a Kenko Pro #5 achromatic close up lens with the Nikkor for the same result. Perfect sharpness across the frame as APS-C only sees the lens' sweet spot. One of the best values in lenses out there. With a good focusing rail and stacking software, outstanding results will be achieved.

    A Classic Nikon Lens

    If you enjoy retro equipment and the precision of manual photography, this classic 105mm manual-focus f/4 AI-S Micro lens creates beautiful images and works on many modern Nikon digital cameras. Attached is a reduced macro photo, produced by this lens plus PN-11 extension tube, of the color shifting, gold glitter numerals from a US Franklin note, and a full resolution detail from the same image, shot at 6000 x 4000 pixels on a Nikon D7100. The photo could have been better since the image and film planes were not perfectly parallel. This slight discrepancy was sufficient to throw part of the image out of focus due to the incredibly shallow depth of field found at 1:1 magnification at f/8.

    Nikkor 105mm f4 Micro Lens

    I'm, quite familiar with this lens and consider it excellent. The field of view is extremely flat and perfect for flower or landscape photography. The flatness of the lens does cause noticeabledistortion in portraits and even full figure photography, I would recommend either the 85mm F2 or the 105mm f2.5 Nikkors. Both are excellent for portraits and full figure when used at f4 and above.

    Sharper than my A7ii can resolve

    This lens is famous for its sharpness and flat field. At f11 and f16 it is sharper than my 24mp full frame can resolve. MF makes you work a bit but you probably should anyways. About 1/10th the cost of a new AF lens.
