MANSFIELD PARK IS ANOTHER JEWEL CREATED BY JANE AUSTEN

I love the old-period, English series novels adapted to TV or regular movies... And much more those written by Jane Austen. I enjoyed Mansfield Park very much.

  • Jane Austen would approve...

Although this DVD was released as part of a set in 2004, it's the 1980s BBC production of Jane Austen's MANSFIELD PARK, and, thankfully, it's much more faithful to the book than the film of a few years ago. Since this is my favorite Austen novel, I was delighted to find the dramatization. The story itself is a little unlike Miss Austen's other books in that the heroine isn't a spunky, determined, fiery, charming character. Fanny Price is almost exactly the opposite - a timid, mouse-like little thing, taken from her poor home as a child and plunked down in her uncle's grand estate to be raised with her wealthy cousins. Is this an Austen heroine? Yes - her inward courage (it takes courage both to love and to stand away from the crowd) and her determination are just as great, although ...

  • The Best Mansfield Park!!

I have only seen this "Mansfield Park" because I have heard that the others are not as close to the book and not as clean. I believe that "Mansfield Park" is not quite as popular as other Austen movies such as"Pride and Prejudice," "Sense and Sensibility," and "Emma," but I think that all Austen fans will enjoy this version, if they enjoy the older BBC movies (or don't mind the slightly old filming) as well!! Fanny and Edmund are portrayed very well, and if you look closely at Edmund he plays in the newest version of "Persuasion," and Maria and Uncle Bertram also star in the A&E's "Emma!!!!" I love to watch it!!!!

  • Best DVD version available (but you should still read the book)

For students or book club members who want to be able to discuss Mansfield Park with a minimum of effort, this is the best available choice. The 1983 PBS mini-series is essentially true to Austen's book, although of course there are many moments when narration had to be changed into dialogue or scenes were simplified. The real issue here is that Austen's narration is witty, subtle and graceful, but that wonderful narrator's voice is gone when the book is made into a film script. If you have to watch a video version, this is the best one to choose... but don't cheat yourself... read the book! read the book! read the book!

  • Great Classic

This older adaptation may seem a little boring because it's not a big production and the sound quality could be better, but because I'm a Jane Austen fan I like watching all the different versions and was happy to add this to my collection. I only wish closed captioning was offered with all BBC films.
