I was surprised to find this item in the first place. So many beat-up copies out there not worth anywhere near what they were asking for. The price was right, and the seller was very responsive to my questions. The packaging came in undamaged. I haven't looked at the contents yet because I'm shipping it to my son in Nashville. I don't expect any damage.

old g late to the party

knowing the rest of their catalog (and backstory) pretty well, i hadn't heard the debut before buying it on cd. it really is a compelling listen. sound effects, spacey bombast and sonic subtleties of later albums really do have their roots in this lp. i understand now how the rest of the band continued to "donate" Syd's share of the PF's royalties long after he'd made his exit. Mr B was genius with a capital "G". part of it is the simplicity or maybe childishness in his lyrics - they invite listeners in with their accessibility. they do me anyway. he must have been a beautiful friend. btw, all props are due to Roger Waters for his current anti-apartheid sentiments and actions.

  • Lucifer Sam

Piper is one of the great 60's psychedelic albums and Syd plays the part of a madman perfectly through lyrics, music (and other strangeness). Pow R. Toc H. is probably the strangest song on the album and I would imagine that it is the one song here that scares everybody away. In reality, it's not all that strange and Floyd went on to do much stranger work (even without Syd) so don't let the other reviews turn you off to this masterpiece. Piper is a must have for those of you who dig 60's psychedelic Rock. 5 Huge Stars.

  • A Classic

I first bought a copy of this album in the early 1970s in the U.K. It serves as probably the greatest example of psychedelic rock, and the greatest sampling of songs by the late Syd Barrett. It makes one wonder what a second album with Barrett would have been like. He's pictured with the band on A Saucerful of Secrets, but only contributed one song. As David Gilmour put it, Barrett was out of control, so they made a deal. Gilmour would tour and record, Barrett would sit at home and write the songs. Of course, it didn't work out that way. I can't name just one strong song on Piper; they're all strong. This album is a must, not only for Pink Floyd fans, but everyone interested in the psychedelic era of music.

  • good

a totally different sounding group from what they became. I like is as good as their later years and more than some of their early stuff. All rocking tunes, can't deny Syd's talent. An early R N R tragedy. Wish he had done more stuff with the band

  • If You're a Psyche Fan

The Piper at the Gates of Dawn Rolling Stone magazine lists Piper as one of the 500 greatest albums of all time; furthermore, numerous lists tout it as the best psychedelic album. Where Piper stands historically makes no difference. If you're a psyche fan, this album belongs in your collection. No text. Lyrics included.
