About this product

Product Information

This lavish biopic directed by Mick Davis follows Italian painter Amadeo Modigliani (Andy Garcia) as he struggles to establish himself as a successful artist in early 20th-century Paris. The film mainly focuses on Modigliani's tumultuous relationships with friend and rival Pablo Picasso (Omid Djalili), and with Jeanne Hebuterne (Elsa Zylberstein), a beautiful young woman the artist seduces and begins painting a year prior to when the film begins. Now a mother to Modigliani's illegitimate child, Jeanne is torn between her love for the painter (whom her father forbids her to see because he's a Jew), and her loyalty towards her baby (which her father threatens to hand over to the authorities if Jeanne has any involvement with Modigliani). All too ready to accept his fate as a failure, Modigliani has not sold a painting in months, lives in relative squalor, and spends his hours drinking heavily and smoking opium despite warnings that it is killing him. The film travels with the artist through the eventful year leading up to his death, setting the stage for a night that brings both triumph and tragedy. Through the reappearing character of a boyhood version of the artist, MODIGLIANI explores what drew the man to painting, and the demons that ultimately drove him to self-destruction. While MODIGLIANI presents itself as a work of fiction, it does provide the viewer with a visually stimulating outlet into a time and place where much of modern art history was made.

Very easy transaction. Unfortunately, though, when the item arrived it didn't quite meet the criteria for "Very Good" condition, as stated in the listing. The outer box as well as every one of the cases and liners inside showed various levels of damage as shown in my pictures. The discs themselves appear to be fine and for $5 it's hard to complain, but I might have considered other listings for the item if I knew the actual condition.

Took 14 days to get here. When received it in tight packaging, was careful getting it out so wouldn't rip it but the cover was already ripped in a way I wouldn't have been able to rip it. But overall, book is in great shape, just weird it took so long to get here. No seller communication...I have not reached out, book was at a fair price.

    Fantastic Movie!!!

I am aware that this movie got some negative reviews but I find this movie fascinating! Andy Garcia is great in it and Elsa was a great choice for his wife (she looks just like the painting Modigliani did of her). This movie rates in my book!!!

  • A Truly Great Art Movie

This movie is HARD to find. I believe its out of print and had a very small release. Buy it if you can find it. Its not 100% accurate about the life and times of Modigliani by any means, its a fictional take BASED on his life and times... but for pure entertainment sake, its fantastic. I am a full time artist, and part time movie snob... so this one really got scrutinized by me, and its great.

  • Strong, effective rendering of artist and his times

I enjoyed this from start to finish. Even though it asks you to suspend your belief in dramatic fashion, the movie holds together beautifully and I was never really disturbed by the various devices used. Some people, no doubt, will be. If you want a love story, this is a particularly poignant one. If you want some background to the great art of the post-WWI period, this is earthy and sensual, just as I believe the times to have been. Nicely balanced throughout (except perhaps for the "absinthe" scene in the zinc bar near the end) it is also a very well-casted movie. The two principals are more than satisfactory, and this Picasso is also well rendered. Two thumbs up.

  • Love the music, love the characters, love the love story, unique.

Love the music, love the characters, very unique love story. 5 stars.
