Though THE SIMPSONS MOVIE is best seen after a lifetime of watching reruns of the show and repeating its endlessly quotable lines, viewers don't have to be die-hard fans to get the jokes. Screenwriters Matt Groening, James L. Brooks, and Co. are at the top of their game here, channeling the show at its best. The film comes after 18 seasons of the series, but it's certainly more in the spirit (and quality) of the show's best years.

Finally! The Simpsons Movie.
I saw this movie twice in theaters, and still bought the DVD. First viewing, I wound up liking it better than I thought I would. Expectations were lowered by mixed reviews and the nagging thought: "What more could they really do after umpteen years on the air?" But the movie, in a very entertaining way answered that question and dispelled the bad review comments in my mind. The premise is often used - Homer does something really stupid, and the family has to pull together and bail him out. The full length movie format allows them to add whole series of events showing how small things can mushroom totally out of control and still have time to resolve the colossal mess. This time out, Homer's fascination with a pig causes him to pollute Springfield to a point where the town is isolated & ... I saw this movie twice in theaters, and still bought the DVD. But the important thing is, this is all done with new jokes. I laughed through a large part of the movie. There was still a bit of a moral to it, but if you pay attention, there's often a bit of a lesson learned in every television episode, too. Some of the family drama in the middle part of the movie, while the Simpsons were in Alaska, seemed a little slow. It might have come off a little better if it had been broken up with a few laughs - maybe cut back to what was going on in Springfield a couple of times. But this was a perceptual thing - maybe a bit awkward to have the borderline poignancy smack dab in the middle of a relatively fast-paced and largely slapstick kind of comedy. All in all, it's still a must-see for the Simpsons fanatic. For those that aren't such huge fans, this could still make a good family film - if you don't mind the "potty humor" style of the Simpsons. Like some of the old WB cartoons, there's some stuff in there that adults will appreciate and totally go over the wee ones' heads, and of course unlike those cartoons, there's a preponderance of humor that's nowhere near that subtle. Testimonials: First viewing was with my teenage nieces. The three of us agreed that it was easily one of the better movies we saw last year (2007) and figured it was worth buying the DVD when it was released. Second viewing, with my girlfriend & her then 8-year old son, got three definite thumbs up - though someone got a little antsy in the middle of the movie and a little squirmy with the couple of "kissy face" scenes with Homer and Marge. Of course, I still have to ask: What took them so long to make this movie in the first place?

WOOHOO!! The Movie did NOT let us down!
Confession: my husband and I are HUGE Simpsons fans. We have every season on DVD that has been released to date and a house full of figures, t-shirts, and ... I can best sum it up with one of the great true-isms of our home and every conversation we have: "Everything comes back to the Simpsons." That being said, we speculated in detail for months about the movie. Would it (like some of the Star Trek movies and the X-Files movies, which come immediately to mind) just turn out to be a good-but-not-great episode? Would they use real actors or the animated characters? Would they pack in as many celebrity cameos as they could possibly fit into 90 minutes? We'd finally decided that the only possible storylines that could "carry" a movie would be Homer's mother coming home and falling for ... Confession: my husband and I are HUGE Simpsons fans. We have every season on DVD that has been released to date and a house full of figures, t-shirts, and ... I can best sum it up with one of the great true-isms of our home and every conversation we have: "Everything comes back to the Simpsons." That being said, we speculated in detail for months about the movie. Would it (like some of the Star Trek movies and the X-Files movies, which come immediately to mind) just turn out to be a good-but-not-great episode? Would they use real actors or the animated characters? Would they pack in as many celebrity cameos as they could possibly fit into 90 minutes? Thin, perhaps - but we figured the talent could pull it off easily. WRONG!!!! Without missing a beat, the movie starts with the Simpsons' trademark in-your-face sarcastic humor, and the ball stayed in play for the beginning through the end with a storyline so creative and ingenious, neither of us had considered it in our wildest fantasies! That's Matt Groening, and THAT is why The Simpsons is still alive and fresh after decades. If you missed it in the theater, be sure to sit all the way through the credits. You do NOT want to miss Maggie's first clearly-understandable word. Another nice and long-overdue little feature was included in the closing credits: as each voice talent was credited, a thumbnail portrait catalog of all the major characters each actor voices was included. GREAT touch ... and Tess, Marcia and the others got the equal billing they deserve! It was a huge and glorious adventure - far too grand in scale to be broken into "to be continued" episodes. It was a MOVIE. A meaty, substantial movie with a great plot, plenty of twist, and a highly satisfying ending. This is NOT just a long episode - it's a work unto itself. Far exceeding our hopes, the troop did not let us down. The Simpsons Movie is worth owning just as a REALLY funny movie - whether or not you've ever been in to the Simpsons. If you *are* into the show, this is an absolute MUST-HAVE ... but you already knew that. Worth every minute and every penny. An instant CLASSIC!

His unthinking antics once again wreck so much havoc that in order to stop the pollution from spreading the government is forced to act. Homer tries to run away from his problems by heading to Alaska. And eventually realizes, or is forced to realize as usual, that he cannot just run away from his problems. Though an animated film and most kids watch this on TV, this is really geared more for an older audience. Though the kids will still laugh, they may not always know why. I guess the writers figured, hey lets push the PG-13 rating and see what we can do. It is still funny, though there have been funnier episodes. Still it is worth ... Homer has long been the life of The Simpsons, although early in the show's success it seemed that Bart was the main character. Bart got the main bits in Butterfinger adds, and he had the catch phrases on the T-shirts like "Cowabunga", "Eat My Shorts", and so on. Over the course of the show, Homer has done some of the dumbest things known to mankind.His character has thus been transferred to the feature movie format, and he is again in the spotlight. Because of his love for donuts, he puts the town of Springfield in an Armageddon type of situation. Then he and the family escape to Alaska only to return to try to save town. Along the way are numerous funny adventures that'll leave all family members laughing. What I liked the most about this movie is that pretty much every character ...
