  • love it charming indeed

Brother John is is rare classic movie must see made in 1972 actor Sidney Poitier great acting...many come to believe that he may be the second coming. Predictably, there are those in the redneck town who want to lynch him for impersonating Christ (potentially an opportunistic charlatan), while others hope he can reverse the disturbing trends and save lives. Local doctor played by Will Geer initially greets Poitier with scepticism but opens his mind to the possibilities; his son played by Bradford Dillman, on the other hand is cynical of Poitier's intentions which local sheriff Ramon Bieri believes are to agitate the local black community into industrial disputation for better treatment and wages. Lincoln Kilpatrick, Richard Ward and Paul Winfield play local oppressed workers who come to ...

  • Liberation Theology in a Nutshell

This film starts off as a slow and rather pointless mystery about a man showing up coincidently at the time of various relative's deaths, but ends with a rather strange conversation between Will Geer and Sydney Poitier that makes the whole film worthwhile. It is far better than most apocalyptic films at explaining the connections between Liberation Theology and Revelations. I highly recommend it as an example of what Revelations was all about to St. John. This film understands the issues far better than those worthless theological hacks, that are getting all the press now a days.

  • Off the Beaten Track

I bought this because it is one of the more "off the beaten track" movies featuring Sidney Poitier. I had never seen the movie before this purchase, and I did enjoy watching it. The style was rather "campy" and, of course, the subject matter was a bit dated . . . not to mention taking itself 'way too seriously. A bit of humor (as in "Dr. Strangelove") would have helped a lot! Still, it was good to watch Poitier do his stuff, and the mystery element kept me involved in the story line.

  • A Classic

This is Sidney Poitier's rare, superb performances as an enigmatic character going back to his home town. As always, his screen presence is solid and commands respect. When he first started to explore acting, five agents told him that he could never succeed as an actor because of his accent. And this is when he had recently arrived in the United States as a citizen. Now, he is a legend.
