About this product

Product Information

Acclaimed German filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl has two documentaries collected here. "Festival of Nations" is a study of the human body pushed to its limits, with footage of Jesse Owens's performances at the 1936 Olympics provided in close-up detail. Then, "Festival of Beauty" features athletes from a variety of competitions at the 1936 event--including field hockey and swimming--as well as the spectacular conclusion to the games. Notorious for her promotional work for the Nazi party, which led to her being ostracized by the moviemaking industry, Riefenstahl's work still contains plenty of historical value.

  • Immersive documentary of 1936 Berlin Olympics; German language only (No subtitles).

These films are an amazing document of one of the most historical of modern Olympic Games. The film opens with a very artistic interlude that seeks to revive the ancient Greeks through creative photography focused on their architecture and art, and transitions to the first performance of the Olympic Torch & Flame at the modern games (a tradition that continues to the present day). These films were financed as a propaganda effort, but the magnitude of the greatness of the Olympic competition completely eclipses the rampant nationalism exhibited by both the audience members & the German government. I try to imagine the impact of these films on 1930's audiences (who had not been raised with televised Olympic Games), but I can only wonder. The Games were well documented here. I can't imagine ...
