A conservative Presbyterian mother reaches out to the gay community for support after driving her homosexual son to suicide in this made-for-television movie adapted from Leroy Aaron's 1995 novel. Bobby Griffith (Ryan Kelley) hails from a devoutly Christian family. Lately Bobby's been questioning his own sexuality, and upon confiding this information to his older brother, the news quickly circulates to their parents and other siblings. While Bobby's father and siblings resolve to stand by him despite their opposition to his startling revelation, his mother Mary (Sigourney Weaver) believes that her son is committing a sin, and encourages him to change his ways with the help of the church. Despondent over his experiences in the church, Bobby decides that his best option is to move out of the family home, all the while hoping that his mother will find a means of accepting him for who he is. But Mary is staunch in her position, and when Bobby realizes he'll never live up to his mother's expectations he takes his own life. Devastated, Mary seeks consolation from her pastor but fails to find the answers she's looking for. In time, Mary begins a dialogue with the gay community, and discovers that sometimes support can come from the places we least expect.

Anyone who is homophobic or who has homophobic family members may be helped by this film
This is a very well-scripted and acted film based on the true story of a woman who woke up one day to realize that her own homophobia, based on her Christian faith, drove her dear son Bobby to suicide. I am a heterosexual Christian who has at least two relatives who were born gay. I know them both closely enough and well enough to say that they were born that way. I am also aware of Jesus' own words in Matthew 19:12 which clearly indicate to me that some people are indeed born "different." Jesus knew some would not receive what he was saying. That is at the end of the very same verse. This film points out other passages (though not the one I just mentioned) which are interpreted very differently today by some Bible scholars--a way that allows one to love and accept rather than condemn. ... Mary found that out too late. Sigourney Weaver did a magnificent job playing the real Mary Griffith--and Mary Griffith is still alive today. I would just like to add that I grew up in a culture and family that was predisposed to homophobia and I too used to be homophobic, but I was more fortunate in that I knew it was because of fear (for me) rather than any sense of righteousness. I had to purposely face that fear in order to overcome it. I had done so before this film was made, but have high hopes that this film will help people to do just that--learn to face it and overcome it in the name of love for one's fellow humans if nothing else. I hope you will watch it.

EVERYONE NEEDS TO WATCH THIS
I came from an upbringing pretty much like the one in this movie. I was born and raised in a small Southern town, where religion is the focal point. Unfortunately, a lot of the Southern churches are very traditional, and stick to very rigid belief systems. Needless to say, there were not many homosexual people there, and those who were remained closeted, until they could get to a more accepting environment. I never knew a lot about homosexuality, because I had not been around a truly openly gay person, or an activist for homosexuality. I, like many others, was taught to believe that homosexuality was wrong, but never given any explanations as to why, other than: the Bible says so. It was not until I moved to a different area and witnessed "out and proud" homosexuals that I began to ... I came from an upbringing pretty much like the one in this movie. Seeing that some of the most goodhearted and generous people were, in fact, gay, caused me to ask myself the hard questions. If they were so "evil", then how can they do so much good? How can they bring others so much joy and love? Why would God create someone with the ability to love, yet condemn them for it? In a world so full of hate and violence, why would he damn someone simply for loving another? By asking myself these questions, I realized that God would not. God IS love. I know now that many people use the Bible to hide behind their own fears and prejudices. They pick out a line that makes them feel like their hate is valid, and cling to it like a lifeline. And what is worse, is that they spread that hate to others who are seeking answers in their lives. Everyone is quick to say that certain things in the Bible...such as eating certain foods, stoning your children, etc...do not apply to the world anymore. But they want homosexuality to be the one exception to that. Why? Because of their own opinions. It makes them feel like there is validation for their hatred. I believe that a large part of the hatred that is projected onto homosexuals is not the usual factors of bigotry (fear, anger), but rather a lack of understanding. Everyone should educate themselves, and start seeing homosexuals as real people, with real feelings and emotions. They are no different from anyone else. They are beautiful and compassionate people who have so much to offer. If given a chance, they can enrich every life that they touch. The young man this movie was about, Bobby, was a wonderful young man. He had a beautiful life ahead of him. But he, like so many other young LBGT people, was struggling with acceptance. He was made to feel as though there was something wrong with him, and that no one, including God, could ever really love him. He felt that his life had no real meaning, so rather than live a life of pain, he chose to end it. This is the story of so many LBGT youth today. And why? Because we make them feel that way. Anyone who believes that they "choose" to be gay should ask themselves...why would they? They are beaten, abused, ostracized, ridiculed, tortured, condemned, discriminated against, shunned, and their self-esteem destroyed. No one would choose that. The reason that young gay people don't want to be gay is not because it is "wrong", but because of the way that others treat them, and the struggles they know that they will face. And each time we make them feel like they should be ashamed of who they are, rather than proud, we are killing them. This movie is a tragic true story, but one we all face. We need to educate ourselves!

Entertaining and educational
This is a very good movie for multiple reasons. It's based on a true story and the actors portray their parts well. This is a great movie for young people just coming out as well as for parents and friends of someone who has recently come out as gay.
