Ideal for portrait, still life, or low light photography, the Pentax DA 55mm F1.4 SDM lens assures outstanding image quality with clear, high-contrast images, even at image field edges thanks to super-low-dispersion optical elements, extra-low dispersion (ED) optical elements and Pentax original lens coatings. It features water and dust resistant sealing for reliable operation in inclement conditions, and the Pentax quick-shift focus system to allow instant auto-to-manual focus switching. The objective lens surface is treated with Pentax original Super Protect (SP) coating. This special fluorine compound is applied through a vapor deposition process to create a surface that effectively repels dust, water and grease. The combination of special lens coatings, ideal curvature and best positioning of optical elements assures optimized digital imaging characteristics, while effectively minimizing flare/ghosting. It also features an aero bright coating for maximum light transmission, and rounded diaphragm blades to create a more circular aperture for smooth, beautiful bokeh at large apertures. The advanced SDM mechanism assures extra-smooth, super-quiet autofocus operation using a supersonic motor installed in the lens body. Thanks to its SDM-exclusive autofocus system, the lens is quite compact, despite its large maximum aperture.

    Excellent lens with minor drawbacks.

    First things first, this is a premium lens, so if you are looking for a "nifty fifty" go buy the 50mm f1.8 or a vintage lens. If you are looking for an excellent APS-C portrait lens with all of the bells and whistles, this is the lens to get. This lens does fantastic work on pretty much everything you point it at though, so dont think this only has to be for portraits. The cons of the lens are pretty simple: - AF is relatively slow and not the fastest at all. One of the slower lenses, but the focus throw isnt bad. AF is however practically silent and manual focusing is a joy. Its also somtimes necesarry with such a low depth of field, so slow focusing is not exactly a problem. -Premium price tag for basically a fancy 55mm prime, but its absolutely worth it. (Will explain) -Background ...

    Perfect even with small disadvantages!

    I bought that lens for shooting a portraits. I needed small DOF and good separation from background. Pentax SMC DA 55 mm F/1.4 SDM have only small disadvantages: the first is size (but for 85mm eqiv. it is nothing) the second is purple fringing in background with open wide apertures (but probably because of that lens have such great bokeh! yeah!) and thirds (the most important) is flares in back-light shooting. Build quality is great. Speed of AF is enough for portrait. Lens hood is large but give the good protection not only unnecessary light but even from environment objects like branchs. Weather protection helps to shoot in any condition!

    Great prime lens

    Pentax DA*55mm is a great prime lens. light, well made, and very sharp IQ. The only minor flaw that i see is that the lens hood is a little too small, for me, to get the lens cap back on. but that might not be a problem for others. auto-focus works great and is silent. score the lens 9.5/10.

    The best lens Pentax makes for APS-C
