Outstanding 3D Book for Introduction to 3D Printing!
Simply invaluable resource when deciding to purchase a 3D printer. Both authors tackle the sometimes daunting task of trying to explain the hows and whys of what is fast becoming the 3rd industrial revolution. This is a must have book as it takes a complex subject and breaks it down into straightforward details and helpful hints to make your first 3D printer purchase a breeze. I've been doing my research on 3D printers for the last 3 years waiting patiently for the industry to get past the early kits and on to the more reliable assembled models. It hasn't been easy waiting, but finally I took the plunge with the help of this excellent book. Don't let the "Dummies" title put you off. This book is also excellent if you are trying to explain to someone who has no idea what 3D printing is and what you can build. My 87 year old father-in-law looked a bit dumbfounded when I tried to explain 3D printing. Instead, I loaned him my library copy. In two hours of reading, he understood the basic concepts and became engaged in the possibilities of building his own replacement parts for around the house appliances. Because "3D Printing for Dummies" has answered my questions, I have now purchased a new 3D printer (Lulzbot Mini) and am making my own creations reliably. I had to return my library copy but realized that I had to purchase my own as this book should be included with every 3D printer purchased! IT'S THAT GOOD!

Not very useful
Having purchased a 3D printer I was eager to get started. The authors do a good job of discussing the various types of additive print processes, that was interesting, but not very useful. I thought this book would be a good introduction and provide insight into answering these questions: 1. How do I prepare a drawing of the object I wished to 3D print? In fairness, there was a brief mention of some AutoCAD and AutoCAD-like programs, but no indication of how one might use them. (Yes, I know AutoCAD is a very complex program.) It would have been very useful to discuss how the drawing programs are used -- a least generally. 2. How do I translate that drawing into instructions to print the layer-by-layer print job? Once one has a drawing (somehow) of the object to be printed, what do ... Having purchased a 3D printer I was eager to get started. The authors do a good job of discussing the various types of additive print processes, that was interesting, but not very useful. I thought this book would be a good introduction and provide insight into answering these questions: 1. How do I prepare a drawing of the object I wished to 3D print? In my printer the output is transferred to an SD card and inserted into the printer, so it seems that the printer is (somehow) doing the job of translating it into a layer-by-layer instruction set. At least I think so. Without a little understanding you're limited to printing designs others have completed, and the authors do point you to those sources, but did you really buy a 3D printer to produce tchotchkes?
