What do a down-and-out Broadway producer, his anxiety-attack-prone accountant, a go-go dancing Swedish secretary, and a Nazi playwright have in common? But when he meets his new meek, neurotic accountant, Leo Bloom (Gene Wilder), the two accidentally come up with a plot to oversell shares in a surefire flop musical and make off with the profits. The plan sends the new partners-in-crime on a search for the worst play ever: SPRINGTIME FOR HITLER, written by an ex-Nazi (Kenneth Mars) whose only friends are the filthy city pigeons he keeps on his roof. Inspired, manic performances by all involved, along with Brooks's lively direction--which affectionately alludes to such MGM Golden Age musicals as SINGIN' IN THE RAIN--make THE PRODUCERS both referential and highly original as it moves along swiftly to the ultimate musical climax.

One of the greatest movies ever made. It is far better than the later rerelease. I bought this one to be able to enjoy it before it gets banned by the media. Get yours soon or you won't have the chance.

Original Mel Brooks Film w/Zero Mostel & Gene Wilder
Excellent & then some. This 2003 DVD release is of Mel Brooks's 1968 debut as a film director. In 2007, "Producers" still represents Brook's best career achievement & a classic theatre farce. "Producers" gained such extreme acclaim due to over-the-top performances by the 'odd couple' antics of Zero Mostel & Gene Wilder (who made his film debut in this one). Here's the story: Bizarre has-been Broadway producer, Max Bialystock (Zero Mostel), has digressed to seducing little older ladies for checks made out to cash in exchange for hysterically weird 'sexual favors' that rarely take place. It's Bialystock's scam to accumulate enough of their money to produce a Broadway show. Entering into Bialystock's office, interrupting a hysterical sexual role playing game with one of his elderly ... Excellent & then some. After Bloom finds s substantial amount of money unaccounted for, Bialystock (Mostel) seduces even him by conveying his tall tall tale of has-been producer woes. Bloom has a neurotic break-down & pulls out his little blue baby blanket remnant wiping his face for comfort. Bialystock grabs it & Wilder has an immediate anxiety attack! Such a scene between to the lead actors is typical of their ever so long beloved antics. Mostel & Wilder prove to be one of Hollywood's most perfect casting matches. Add to it, that Mel Brooks wrote his most famous comedy script and voila'--"Producers" is a film masterpiece. Following the script again, the now comforted paniced auditor Bloom (Wilder)unwittingly blurts out a sceme that the desperate Bialystock seizes upon to concoct an undetectable plot. Deliberately produce a sure Broadway flop, "sell" 25,000% of the one-night-bust of a play & 'take the money & run'. Bialystock seduces Bloom again; this time to co-produce the flop of all Broadway one-night flops. Reading through the worst scripts they can find, Bialystock discovers the sure loser. Bloom concurs that their top choice for instant failure is half-wit Nazi-wannabe's script, "Springtime for Hitler," which is supposed to redeem the writer's idol, Adolf Hitler. I'm no spoiler, so this is one show you'll have to watch to know the rest. Be assured, there's ample justification for this critic & all others who rave as I do to still view "Producer" as Mel Brooks' best. Aside: Gene Wilder grew up with a mother with disabilities. He learned to be a comedian in order to make her laugh so hard she wet her pants!

Mel Brooks wrote this, Zero Mostel, Gene Wilder and Dick Shawn star in this zany movie about a failed conjob. The recent re-release is slicker, but the original is spicier. An old giglio, a severe neurotic, 2 psycotics and a drag queen make up the main characters of this farce. Must see Dick Shawn in his best looney role and let's face it all he did were looney roles! Lyrics like... Don't be a dummy, be a smartie, come and join the Nazi party. You can see the future-Blazing Saddles-coming from Mel Brooks. The Producers Old vs. New
Well after falling in love with the 2004 movie, I had to have the original. It was good. But I like the newer one quite a bit more. I especially like the way they used many of the same lines. The song and dance from 2004 really moved the picture along. Also Uma Thurman playing Ulla showed that that character has class. In the original Ulla is not much more than a call girl.

Waste of time.
I found this movie a total waste of time. Stupid story line. Not funny or entertaining. I am a fan of Gene Wilder but this one will not be watched again by me.
