  • Not as consistent as his first recordings...

    From the first moment I heard 'I'm Just An Old Chunk of Coal' coming out of my car radio, I knew I was going to like John Anderson. His first five albums for Warner Brothers confirmed my initial impression. However, beginning with this album's predecessor, [the somewhat uneven 'Eye Of A Hurricane'] he seemed to drift a bit. It was difficult to put a finger on it. Contentment? Malaise? The songwriting was good...the picking was good...but he seemed to lack the 'hunger' and commitment so evident on his initial releases. While I still enjoy his musical output, perhaps it is unfair to judge him by the the consistently high standards he achieved in the beginning. I gave this album an 'Average' rating because, in my opinion, it is an 'Average' John Anderson effort. Fortunately, this still puts ...
