Product Information

Gregory Peck stars as Charles Keith, the ground-based supervisor of a crew of astronauts led by mission commander Jim Pruett (Richard Crenna) conducting a series of endurance tests while in space. When Keith orders the ship to reenter earth's atmosphere, their craft experiences a mechanical problem, leaving the astronauts adrift. With the help of veteran astronaut and rescue specialist Ted Dougherty (David Janssen), Keith conceives a plan for saving the crew, whose lives are further endangered by the limited amount of available oxygen. Unfortunately, the takeoff of Dougherty's rescue craft is delayed by a hurricane. Realizing the crew's final hour might be at hand, Keith summons their wives in order to let them communicate with their spouses. During astronaut Buzz Lloyd's (Gene Hackman) conversation with his wife, he becomes hysterical, using up much of their oxygen in the process. Given the paucity of oxygen, Keith suggests that one of the crew might increase the chances for survival of the other two by offering to cut off his own oxygen supply. Understandably, this idea is not greeted with great enthusiasm. MAROONED features an intelligent script, Oscar-nominated cinematography, and excellent performances, especially from Hackman and Lee Grant (as Pruett's wife).

All-star cast and an intriguing theme that we all thought about during that era, namely: what happens if they cannot get back for some reason? This movie was released in 1969 --- several years before Apollo 13 --- so the exploration of this possibility was very gripping at the time. The special effects were excellent relatively speaking, though the CG generation today will probably find them somewhat lacking. There are no special features on the DVD, which was disappointing. {Spoiler alert.} The cold war was very hot at this time, and no doubt the makers of the film wanted to explore how our mutual space programs might help cool the relations between the Russians and the US. I saw this as a kid at age 9, and there are scenes which have stuck with me ever since. Thus, it was a delight 40 ... Great movie
This is a movie about an Apollo spacecraft that has suffered a major malfunction in space and the efforts of NASA to save the crew. Ironically it was released only months before the REAL Apollo 13 crisis. I have wanted a copy of this film on DVD for years. It won an Academy Award for special effects!
