About this product

Product Information

Jack Lucas (Jeff Bridges), a self-obsessed shock jock who thinks he has it all, is about to hit rock bottom. The cult personality spends his time on the radio insulting and berating his listeners, but when one caller takes Jack's advice literally and shoots up a New York City hotspot, Jack is sent swirling down into a depression that has him suicidal three years later. However, he is rescued out of the night by a different kind of knight in shining armor--a homeless man named Parry, played fabulously by Robin Williams, who thinks he's on a quest for the Holy Grail, which he believes to be in a Fifth Avenue town house. Parry serves as the living embodiment of Jack's guilt--Parry's beloved wife was killed in the nightclub massacre. Jack soon becomes conviced that by helping Parry he will also wind up helping himself, so he tries to help Parry win his lady love (Amanda Plummer), at the expense of risking his own relationship with Anne (Mercedes Ruehl, in an Academy Award-winning role), who has stood by his side during his downward spiral.Terry Gilliam's romantic parable THE FISHER KING is yet another visually stunning work from a master filmmaker, with a different kind of heart from Gilliam's other films, delving deep into the nature of love and loss, of guilt and redemption, of character and tragedy. Featuring a terrific cast and unusual locations for a fantasy story (New York City, brilliantly photographed by Roger Pratt), THE FISHER KING is both an exciting adventure and a charming romance.

    Intense, interesting, long

I had seen this when it first came out and knew it was serious and different than other Robin Williams movies but couldn't remember details. I found it worth seeing again but probably won't watch it again for a long while. It needed more editing but was a profound story and fine acting.

  • The Fisher King (DVD, 1999)

Jeff Bridges is a self absorbed radio personality who in almost every way has no personality at all. He is a Howard Stern type who belittles and talks down to everybody. He thinks that he is the most important thing next to ice-cream but in reality he is just another foul mouthed liberal who is being paid too much. One day in his typical "Go to Hell" style he starts ranting about nothing and some nut case hears him and takes it seriously. He goes to a local hot spot and opens fire, killing a bunch of people. Instantly, Jack Lucas's (Bridges) career is in free-fall. His sponsors want a rope around his neck, and the world completely turns it's back on him. Within three years, he is broke, suicidal, and in a troubled relationship with his girlfriend and instead of a million dollar apartment , ...

  • Great Movie, deserves updated audio processing

This is one of Hollywood's best movies of the '90s and, I believe Robin Williams best to date. Jeff Bridges shows yet further range in his enormous talent, Amanda Plummer is a joy to watch, Michael Jeter's performance sadly reminds us that he left us too soon and, Mercedes Ruehl has us rooting and cheering triumphantly for love. Although funny, this movie was wrongly marketed as a comedy. It is a cinematic fantasy for sure of modern urban life, love and, pain. But, part fantasy, part comedy, mostly drama, it is a love story at its core. It is truly a masterpiece of story and story-telling via cinema. It deserves an audio updating to at least 5.1 surround.

  • The Fisher King

I have to admit, I was not a Robin Williams fan; too much frantic energy for my taste. So I was actually surprised when I realized that I like this movie so much. I've probably seen it 7-8 times in the last few years. Here, Robin was, for him, somewhat restained. Both he and Jeff Bridges (who I always liked) play two downtrodden characters, both of whom have been nearly destroyed by the tragic events in their lives. Fate brings them together and one helps the other to find peace and redemption, and he is helped in return. The story tells me that redemption is still possible if one wants it badly enough, and it's never too late to know true joy. Mercedes Ruehl and Amanda Plummer are exceptional in their roles as girlfriends of the two characters. Mercedes even won an Oscar for her role. ...
