About this product

Product Information

The British class system is under fire in this adaptation of John LeCarre's (THE TAILOR OF PANAMA) novel. George Smiley (Deholm Elliot) is called in to investigate the murder of a schoolteacher's wife at a public school. Encountering snobbery and slippery alibis at every turn, Smiley must figure out which attitudes and lies are relevant to the facts of the case. Elliot is excellent in the title role of this British mystery which also features Glenda Jackson and a young Christian Bale.

  • Early Le Carre Sparkles

OK so from the outset, know that I am a Le Carre Fan. That being said, I am extremely critical of what other writers and directors do to my hero's work. For me there is only lec Guinness as George Smiley. As soon as I read Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, I knew it was written for him alone. That said, this Denholm Elliott effort is very good and the story, while seeming to be a routine detective tale, is really an early working of Le Carre's raison d'etre. Love, Trust, Loyalty, Betrayal of all by most. Super performances by all involved. Joss Ackland is excellent in the part of Fielding (my own choice would have been Iain Cuthbertson) Glenda Jackson proving again she is a better actress than an MP as Ailsa Brimley. Actors I have adored for years in cameo roles include Ronald Pickup, Billie ...

  • A Murder of Quality

Denholm Elliott plays detective George Smiley in John Le Carre's mystery "A Murder of Quality." Elliott was an Academy Award Nominee and a fine actor of dozens of films, including "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade", "Raiders of the Lost Arc" and "Hound of the Baskervilles." Smiley receives a request from an old friend played by Glenda Jackson to investigate the murder of her niece at a private school for boys. Jackson, a fine actress herself was a veteran of many films produced in the 1970's and 1980's, and she does a nice job in a supporting role in this film. There seem to be several potential suspects; the police try to zero in on the dead woman's husband, but Smiley doesn't think he is capable. This is a better than average murder mystery, but not much better than average. The plot ...

  • "A Murder of Quality"

An accurate adaptation of LeCarre's book. Denholm Elliott and Joss Au ckland excelled in their portrayal of their characters. An excellent example of a British "Who done it".

  • A Murder of Quality

I love anything by John LeCarre and this film was an excellent rendition of his marvelous book. I also think the cast was excellent as was the setting and atmosphere of the film; exactly like the book. If I have one problem with the film is that Alec Guiness was not able to play George Smiley (he was dead) and Denhom Elliot's portrayal of George Smiley was a bit one dimensional, in my opinion. Of course, it is an impossibility to fill Sir Alec's shoes. All in all, I loved it!!!!

  • Terrific screenplay, written by Le Carre, better than the book really.

    Excellent
