About this product

Product Information

At dawn on September 17, 1862, David Miller's peaceful farmland was the location for the opening scene of a battle to determine a nation's fate, in which twenty-two thousand men became casualties on America's single bloodiest day. Here, Lee's resolve to preserve his Maryland campaign first clashed with McClellan's stubborn determination to end that campaign by implementing his own carefully crafted battle plan. This is a story of human struggle against fearful odds, of men seeking to do their duty, of simply trying to survive in a contest which had implications that echoed decisively throughout Antietam's other actions and reverberated beyond the close of fighting that evening. This is The Cornfield. Book jacket.

Reviews
...it's the incredible detail of the text that powers this book to excellence. Sometimes, you lose track of the bigger action as you follow individual regiments, but the command perspective brings it all back together. Marvelous., Welker's scholarship provides an important contribution to the study of the battle of Antietam that complements an important body of work as well as enhances our understanding of the fighting in The Cornfield. It is a valuable addition to the genre., The morning action is described through a combination of gripping personal accounts, many of which are published for the first time...a tantalizing narrative that sheds new light on the famous battle that became known as the single bloodiest day in the American Civil War., The book is one that should be on every shelf of anyone who has interest in the military history of the Civil War. The continual ebb and flow of both sides over the remnants of the bloody cornfield are of epic proportion., Welker brings the intense combat and tragedy of the Cornfield to a personal level by interspersing the text with various human interest stories...Students of the battle will want to pick up a copy for Welker's analysis alone., Heavily annotated with endnotes, this fine work stands out as one of the best new books on Antietam in the past decade., ''Author David A. Welker ...has written a carefully researched, very detailed - but also very readable - account of this part of the Battle of Antietam to bring clarity to chaos and help readers understand the succession of events in the Cornfield... He is to be commended for skilfully structuring a narrative that will appeal to both general readers and military historians. The book benefits from an unusually lavish provision of twenty six, specially drawn maps''

Good customer service with Half-Price books! The book was listed in "very good" condition which was not the case. It had writing on many pages, highlighting throughout, etc. which is not what "very good" is supposed to have. I contacted them and they immediately apologized and refunded my total purchase price including shipping. I gave 5-stars because of their wonderful customer service.

The SFBC The New Jedi Order: Dark Tide was as described as "Very Good", but appeared to be in "Good" condition. Received the book in a timely manner, only concern was the shipping package which was a thin poly envelope with zero protective cushioning. Two messages with seller regarding condition of the book since a stock picture was used, whether or not it was a "library" book and the shipping method used...took a few days to respond each time.
