Great action movie about a Vietnam era Medal of Honor winner who obviously is suffering from post traumatic stress syndrome. John Rambo (Stallone), after years of high adrenalin action and killing, is just one more war-damaged person who is searching for the answers to the biggest questions in their lives, Why? What's Next? Where do we go from here? After finding out that he is the last living member of his former company of commandos, John Rambo is just one more ticking time bomb looking for a place to go off. Passing through a small Oregon town on foot, he is stopped by a local cop, Brian Dennehe, and escorted through town to the other city limit, because "his type" aren't welcome there. Most would have moved on. . .but this man on the edge, this time bomb, has just found its place to ... When he refuses to move on, as unfair as it may have been, Dennehe places him under arrest and takes him to jail. Brutalized there by officer Gault, Rambo has flashbacks of Vietnamese torture and escapes. Chased by Dennehe, he steals a motorbike and winds up in the mountains where the bike is wrecked. Now with police and dogs, he is the object of a manhunt. Officer Gault is a true sadist, and is out to kill Rambo. While trapped on a mountain ledge and totally unarmed, Gault is shooting at him from a helicopter. Forced to jump or be shot, Rambo jumps through tree branches to break his fall. Still under fire, he throws a baseball sized rock at the copter, and Gault falls to his death. Now armed with Gault's rifle, a hunting knife, and his survival skills, he takes the fight back to the police. They started a war, and now he's going to give them one! Using his guerrilla training, he kills the hunting dogs that were after him, and doesn't kill anyone, but totally incapacitates the entire team. He just as easily could have killed them all. Colonel Sam Troutman (Richard Crenna), Rambo's former commander and friend has heard of the incident and is now on scene to get Rambo before things get any worse. Dennehe is now after Rambo - DEAD ONLY. Using Troutman to try to locate him, a directional fix is achieved and National Guardsmen led by Lt."Stupid" trap him inside an old mine. Believing Rambo killed, and acting so vindicated, they all know where and how this fight started. Troutman, believing Rambo too good to have been killed so easily, thinks that he is still alive. He is! He finds his way out of the old mine and goes after the Sheriff and anyone else who gets in his way. Commandeering a military truck with an M-60 machine gun he runs a roadblock and arrives back in town. He shoots up the place and eventually winds up outside the police station where his ordeal began. Seeing Dennehe on the roof of the building, he shoots the place to hell, and when Dennehe tries to shoot him, he severely wounds him. Out of nowhere, Troutman shows up and stops Ranbo from killing Dennehe. Rambo is able to be taken into custody by Troutman without being killed, and the explosive situation is defused. This movie was just the start of the famous "Rambo" series of movies that will follow. This movie was enjoyable because there was a lot of good action, along with the feeling that the "Bad Cops" had it coming. In reality, this movie did a lot to focus the spotlight on just how many mentally damaged and fragile people were left by that war, and the great need for treatment that existed. This was a good movie, although some scenes are a stretch of the imagination.
