Won't play on everything, but sounds great when you can play it
This is NOT a DVD-Audio or video disc, nor an SACD disc. It is a CD with DTS encoded tracks. If you put it in a player that doesn't automatically decode DTS, you will get nothing but annoying hiss that could damage your speakers or system. My PS3, which handles SACD just fine, would not decode the tracks. Fortunately, my separate Sony Blu Ray player did decode, and the surround is quite nice. The mix is a bit odd in places, differing from the original album (though that's often one of the pleasures of surround discs), but enjoyable in its own way. I recommend it, but be careful regarding your equipment. A freshened classic.......
I imagine that almost everyone over the age on 45 has heard this Cd, album or tape sometime in their life. So I am not going to write a review of one of the top 50 albums of all time. I am sure that every thing that could be said has been said about the music performed on the classic album. There must be something about this album I like because I have it in SACD already and had it on vinyl at one time. I will start by saying the opening song is not the same from the original album or CD. If you have listen closely you should hear a scratch like sound on the original but is not present on the DTS-CD. I noticed this also on the Allman Brothers Live at the Fillmore East. You Don't Love Me has a different opening. After the opening tune being a different take the rest of the CD is the ... My audio system was designed for music and consists of four four way full size tower speakers, a 12 in. sub with a center cannel. The reason I bring this but is that a lot of the music on this disc comes from the rear channels so if you do not have full range speakers you may lose some of the depth of sound. In all of my research I have never be able to find out if mixes for SACD, DVD Audio or DTS take in to account many people use their audio systems for home theater and they do double duty for music and many home theater systems have smaller speakers in the rear. If I had any complaints it would be that the guitar seems to come from them the rear speaker and not the front. This is not the first time I have noticed this on a DTS disc. I feel the mix/instrument placement could be better placed but then again this was an album that originally was stereo so the surround sound is a nice change. Maybe as the say in the car restoration business, a respray. It was ment to freshen up a classic.

One of the BEST...DTS CD's ever made Santana Abraxus
If you ever want to demo your surround sound system, this is the disk. Santana Abraxus DTS CD is a VERY well sound-engineered album. Sound quality is exemplary ! Some other SACD or DVD-A discs you can barely even notice the rear channels being driven. Not on this disc. Sound mix is perfect, and a treat to the ears. This is an audiophile quality disc, and should be one of your DEMO discs. I use it to test new surround sound processors, interconnect cables, speaker cables, speakers, and general speaker placement. This was ALWAYS a highly regarded, and IMHO, the best Santana album made on regular CD or vinyl...just crank it up a few notches and you then realize what a DTS CD sounds like.
