Still the best amplifier I have ever owned.
I have had a Yamaha A-500 since 1984. The differences between the A-500 and the thousands of other models is that the A-500 has .001 percent THD. The original manual specified it at .0009, but they probably adjusted it later due to production consistency. It is clean and clear, no digital processing, no electronic volume knob. The audio is fed through mechanical switches rather than mosfet switches which later models use, which cause distortions at various input levels. You can even route audio through this amp/preamp without the power on! If you like recording, this is the best! The phono preamp is excellent and low noise, and it works with both moving magnet and moving coil cartridges. The input switches do wear out, but if you push them carefully, they will last forever. You will get crosstalk or bleed through if you have un-terminated inputs, but that is with every preamplifier. So far I have had no issues with the protection circuitry. Be aware that if you connect this to low wattage speakers that it really has the power to BLOW THEM! The bass and treble controls are designed for CD emphasis correction, don't be afraid to use them. If you like powerful, clear vocals like Barbara Streisand, Sheena Easton, or Olivia Newton John, Melissa Manchester, Celine Dion or Don Williams or Johnny Cash, this amplifier is well suited to to play these artists with NO DISTORTION! If you are hearing distortion it might be your speakers! Adhere to the ohm rating as you can burn these out. Also remember that these are typically more than 30 years old. If you are playing loud, distorted bass from rap music, the A-500 is not for you, though it can handle it, I recommend other types of amplifiers more suited for that use. This is a flat frequency response, low distortion amplifier that will blow away the quality of most of what you find at the audiophile shops today! The Yamaha A-500 is one of the first pre-amplifier amplifier combos to include a DAD input for your CD player in 1982! (Digital Audio Disc)

Yamaha A-500 Integrated Amplifier
All functions are in good working order. I have not used it with large speakers, but the small Yamaha speakers, I have been using with it, provide excellent sound. No noise, no distortion. The volume, tone, and balance controls are not noisy, as is often the case with older equipment. Cosmetically, it is in excellent condition
