    Good Product, Poor Wiring Instructions

    The timer was installed the day after I received the device and is controlling a 40 gallon water heater as planned. The only drawback, which caused the one star penalty, is that the wiring instructions and diagrams are poor and unless you have experience wiring 240 volt, 30 amp devices, hire a qualified electrician to do the install. When the timer mechanism is removed to mount the case, install the battery and program the timer settings at a table or work bench, which is easier than programming the unit on the wall.

    Intermatic EH40 Cons

    This timer replaced an older First Alert water heater timer that stopped working. The instructions for the wiring connections diagram isn't correct. You need to install jumpers from terminal 1 to terminal 3 and another one from terminal 2 to terminal 5. The jumpers that are included in the package are not long enough to connect terminal 2 to terminal 5. You will need to make a longer jumper for this connection. The jumpers should have been installed on this timer before it left the factory. The LCD display is tiny compared to the LCD display on the First Alert. Also the battery replacement cover is difficult to remove and replace.

    Intermatic EH40 electronic timer 240V

    Intermatic is known for its quality. I switched from a mechanical to an electronic timer to add multiple settings during the day and to eliminate the inherent problem of slippage of the mechanical trippers. The very small letters are hard to read while programming the timer. Over all, I'm pleased with its operation. Would recommend this product.

    220 volt water heater timer. Works well!

    I've had one of these for about ten years and it simply does what it is intended to do. Don't forget it requires 220 volts! I recently needed to replace an older timer that was a mechanical clock type and bought this again.

    EH40 Water Heater Timer

    So far it's great! Doing exactly what I wanted it to do. Like other reviewers have mentioned the LED screen is too small and hard to see in a dark area. I think that they could have put a little more effort in to designing the unit and the electronics, like allowing individual days to be programmed separately rater than just MTWTF on one program and SS on another. But, it sure beets the old time clock and for the price it's great.
