This is a nice collection of John Wayne films that stretches over 30 years. Shepherd of the Hills (1941) is more of a community story than a western, and Wayne is not the lead character. But the story is well told. It is about a calm, patient, peaceable man who arrives into a hill country community where grudges and vengeance are a generational way of life, and how this man's place in the community begins to affect his new neighbors for the better. The Spoilers (1942) takes place in Gold Rush Alaska, where Randolph Scott and Marlene Dietrich operate a saloon and a casino, designed to help separate the miners, like Wayne, from their gold. Given events going on in the world in the 1940s, movies that portrayed the good guys overcoming adversity found a welcoming audience. By 1967 ... By 1967 audiences changed as did story-telling, and we get a less than wonderful tale. The War Wagon is a tale about good guys v bad guys, where neither side gets rewarded for their efforts. Twists and plot turns instead of rewards tend to dominate this farce of a tale. By 1969 Wayne found a tale that better suited his skill set: True Grit. This was a picture that garnered a lot of Academy Award attention, especially for Wayne. So much so that studios began looking around for another tale to bring Rooster Cogburn back to the screen. By 1975 the boss's wife (Martha Hyer) came up with a new screenplay for the Rooster. Not much of one as far as screenplays go, but it was an effective vehicle to meet the demand for a return engagement of "Rooster J. Cogburn." Matched up with Katherine Hepburn, we get so much star power to fill up the screen that we hardly notice that the story line is so weak. As it turns out, that star power banter between Hepburn and Wayne makes for an entertaining 90+ minutes and is well worth your time..
