My grandson is not in this book yet. He loves this series and doing well with it so we plan to stick with it. This book is in great condition so I wanted to go ahead and buy it now.

Math turn around!
I actually used Life of Fred as a stand alone for my homeschooled daughter in high school. I'm ashamed to say that I didn't expect much out of her in math, so I was just looking to keep her attention. She was needing so much review from her years of schooling, that I had to use up a year of high school just to get her up to speed. The good news is that three years later when tested at the local community college she tested right into intermediate level college math. No remedial courses needed. After YEARS AND YEARS of poor school performance, tutoring, and homework help, we found these books and man they worked. Just wanted to share that she is getting ready to graduate Nursing school (BSN) with close to a 4.0 and works as a med math tutor! I know this probably sounds like an infomercial, ... Great book to help math resistant children UNDERSTAND math!!!
I bought this to help my son gain a better understanding of Fractions as he was really struggling with his regular curriculum. I LOVE this book - it uses a fun, quirky story to teach - my son loves it. It engages quite a bit of thought in the problems - yet it's still presented in a way that he does not mind as much as his regular curriculum. I don't think I'd use it as a complete stand-alone curriculum - but you could just use worksheets offline and supplement a little - or couple it with your existing curriculum. We are using it with Singapore Math. I will be trying to find the entire set for my younger daughter, and I will be purchasing the next book for my son when he finishes fractions. This really doesn't compare with any other curriculum I have seen. It reads like a book - ... It helps the child understand math through situations that relate math to life (though far-fetched sometimes). It has GIANT kid appeal. I would almost like a practice workbook or pages in the book in each section to practice what you learned. There are only about 6-7 problems at the end of each chapter - and 10 for each 'bridge'. However - it works very well to supplement (as I explained above). The ONLY thing I dislike is that in each chapters the answers are given right after the questions. This has not been a problem in that my son has been very good about working them all and then looking at the answers - but in some cases they are at the bottom of the page or on the facing page. I would prefer they be in the back, or at least on the back of the page that has the problems. Overall though - this has truly helped support the math he has learned and helped him understand much better. Awesome curriculum!!!
