About this product

Product Information

Amy Tan was born into a family that believed in fate. In The Opposite of Fate: A Book of Musings, she explores this legacy, as well as American circumstances, and finds ways to honor the past while creating her own brand of destiny. She discovers answers in everyday actions and attitudes - from writing stories and decorating her house with charms, to dealing with three members of her family afflicted with brain disease and shaking off both family curses and the expectations that she should become a doctor and a concert pianist. With the same spirit, humor, and magic that characterize her beloved novels, Amy Tan presents a refreshing antidote to the world-weariness and uncertainties we face today, contemplating how things happen - in her own life and beyond - but always returning to the question of fate and its opposites: the choices, charms, influences, attitudes, and lucky accidents that shape us all.

  • Fun, insightful, entertaining and so Chinese!

Fun, insightful, entertaining and so Chinese! My being an Anglo and having married a lovely Chinese lady (complete with a boy and girl, now degreed) I can relate to all the Asian nuances in her delightful book. I have the CD version so hearing her narration made it all the more convincing and entertaining. She jumps around in time a bit, but no bother as it all comes together in an easy, well metered style that's easy to comprehend. If you don't have a strong English vocabulary you may want to pick up a pocket dictionary as Ms. Tan's word usage may be a challenge for some as it is beyond high school academic (today's high schools, anyway). My English learner wife found many English expressions perplexing. However, she go the gist of the stories anyway. Her delivery is personable and easy, ...

  • Nathaniel by John Saul

I was excited finding a John Saul book I didn't have. I don't think it was his best. In places, the pace was too slow. The prologue ties in with the story later on. However, the transition to the actual story is a little confusing. The story itself kept you guessing. Be ready for a surprise ending! True John Saul all the way.
