Legendary martial arts choreographer Yuen Woo Ping returned to the director's chair for the first time in nearly a decade and a half with this lavish historical action-drama. Su Can (Vincent Zhao) is a fearless warrior in the late days of the Quin Dynasty, and after serving his time in the military he's eager to return home to his beautiful wife Yuan Ying (Zhou Xun) and start a family. Six years later, his half-brother Yuang (Andy On) shatters Su Can's idyllic life; filled with hatred for his kin, Yuang has developed a deadly martial arts technique, "The Five Venom Fist," and after using it to vanquish his foes on the battlefield, he's come to get revenge against Su Can. While Su Can can hold his own against Yuang and saves the life of Yuan Ying, Yuang steals their young son and takes him away. After the loss of his son, Su Can falls into a deep depression that grows far worse when his wife dies while searching for their missing child. Su Can becomes a reclusive alcoholic and seems destined to stay that way until he learns his son is alive and needs his help. With the guidance of Lord Wushu (Jay Chou), Su Can trains to win back his fighting skills, mastering "The Drunken Fist," and sets out to rescue his son. TRUE LEGEND IS BEYOND AWESOME!
When I first saw scenes from this movie, I ran to buy a copy. Being a collector, I was happy to pay the $13.00 for a brand new copy. But after seeing the movie, I'm so stoked I have it in my collection. The beginning of this movie is AWESOME (the whole movie is great)! Su Can is an excellent fighter who rescues the prince but gave the glory to his foster brother Yuan, who he loved and always looked out for. 5 years later, Yuan pays Su's family a visit and kills his father. Su hears of this and runs to save his family but finds out that Yuan is using the deadly five venom fists (which his real father used to kill innocent people) and has gold armor plates sewn to his body and seems unstoppable. This movie is so powerful because of Su's wife Ying, and his young son who will stop at nothing to keep their family together. It is a great story with great fight scenes - I mean action packed, heart jumping fight scenes. It tells of a tale of a man broken but because of the love of his wife and the love for his family, he regains his strength. It's a tale that tugs at your heart when you see what has happens to Su and his young son and their fight to remain together. And it makes your heart race when you see Su doing battle when it seems hopeless. That man doesn't know the meaning of giving up. You're right there with him, feeling his pain and rejoicing in his victories. David Carradine has a small but deadly role as an evil fight promoter. This movie was such a treat. Anyone who says that this movie is not excellent is clueless. It has all the elements you want to see in a great martial arts film. It's EXCELLENT. Martial arts at it's best. See it for yourself and you will agree with me. Very highly recommended and will be a staple in your martial arts collection. Enjoy.
