About this product

Product Information

William Friedkin unleashes his flare for tense action and gripping suspense in RULES OF ENGAGEMENT, an exciting military legal thriller that examines the moral gray area of combat experience and reflects on the ethos of the American military in the late 20th century. When the U.S. embassy in Yemen is stormed by anti-American protesters, Marine Colonel Terry Childers (an intense Samuel L. Jackson) rescues Ambassador Mourain (Ben Kingsley) from the explosive siege, and under fire from snipers within the crowd, he orders his men to return fire, resulting in many civilian casualties. To appease international outrage at an apparent war crime, the U.S. government court-martials Childers for violating the Marine's "rules of engagement," and his only hope rests on Marine lawyer Colonel Hayes Hodges (Tommy Lee Jones), a veteran who owes Childers his life for, ironically, a war crime committed by Childers in the Vietnam War. An intense, chiaroscuro courtroom drama and brutal combat film, RULES OF ENGAGEMENT takes a difficult look at the moral ambiguity of life in combat and the value of guilt, honor, and loyal sacrifice in the duty to one's country.

  • Rules of Engagement

Sensing a crisis in Yemen, the U.S. government sends Col. Terry Childers played by Samuel L. Jackson (Jumper, Soul Men, Cleaner, 1408, etc) and a platoon of Marines to remove the U.S. ambassador and his family from the embassy there. Childers and his men succeed but, a gunfight ensues during the evacuation-killing 80 civilians and some of his men. Fearing a court martial that could put him behind bars for the rest of his life-as the military looks into the incident- Childers looks to Col. Hayes Hodges played by Tommy Lee Jones ( In the Electric Mist, No Country for Old Men, In the Valley of Elah, The Hunted, etc) to defend him in court against the charges that are being prepared. The director here is William Friedkin and he has not had a big hit in many years (The Exorcist, The ...

Colonel Terry Childers is a 30-year Marine veteran: a decorated officer with combat experience in Vietnam, Beirut and Desert Storm - a patriot, a hero. But now, the country he served so well has put him on trial for a rescue mission that went terribly wrong. For his attorney, he has chosen Marine Colonel Hays Hodges, a comrade-in-arms who owes his life to Childers. Hodges is not the best lawyer in the service, but Childers trusts him as a brother Marine who knows what it's like to risk death under fire. Bound by duty and friendship, Hodges reluctantly takes the case, even as he begins to doubt the man who saved his life in Vietnam three decades ago. A gripping exploration of the gut wrenching realities of the modern soldier on the battlefield of war and the battlefield of law.

  • Excellent Movie

Even though it was a movie, it appears to be historically accurate for the most part. I felt like I was watching today's news even though this movie was made years ago.
