I am using it to teach my grandchildren about racism along with my own experiences growing up in Georgia in the 1950s I would like to find a book that explains the reasons this publication was needed due to sunset laws etc..

Sociologically speaking, this book defines and illustrates the need for such a book in the era it was originally published: 1936 - 1966. Those thirty years saw quite an improvement in the lives of many people, but there is still a long way to go. Let us keep our eyes on the prize and strive for better.

The "Green Book," now immortalized in cinema, was a vital part of this reality, directing motorists and travelers to those businesses that would serve them. I purchased this book for my students, many of whom have never considered the challenges faced by a significant segment of our past. In its pages one will find evidence of a history that, unless remembered, will continue to exert an influence in the future. Lest we forget the dangers of longing for an idyllic past, one which discriminated against African Americans, such books are necessary as ... Our Shameful History
The Green Book is a glimpse of the bad old days of Jim Crow where a colored person could find lodging, restaurants, etc. What I ordered and read is a copy of the 1940 edition. The Green Book was published annually until the early 60s. We can't afford to revise our history. We have to accept it warts and all. Younger generations must remember the lessons of the past and to heed it's warnings.
