Da attento studioso della realtà del Bel Paese e dei suoi orientamenti, Ricolfi ne traccia un profilo degli ultimi quindici anni, vale a dire una storia economico-sociale al tempo del bipolarismo e dell'alternanza. Il problema è che in Italia, come l'autore ha dichiarato in un'intervista, nonostante "l'aspirazione di tutti a vivere in un Paese normale, la realtà del dibattito politico è ancora quella della guerra fredda". Da noi ben pochi riescono a vedere le cose per quello che sono. Quasi tutti le guardano sempre accompagnate dalla loro ombra ideologica: con il sole del mattino l'ombra si allunga verso destra, con il sole del tramonto si allunga verso sinistra. Ricolfi, invece, racconta l'Italia della Seconda Repubblica come se fosse il Paese delle ombre corte.
