About this product

Product Information

THE FLYING SCOTSMAN follows the standard blueprint for a sports film: underdog overcomes obstacles to become a champion--but adds the element of the hero's real-life mental illness to make an engaging drama. Jonny Lee Miller (TRAINSPOTTING) plays Graeme Obree, a Scottish cyclist who is seemingly past his prime. He has gone from winning races to running a losing bike shop, but he can't be called a quitter. When he learns his old rival will race for a record, Graeme decides to get back in the game. His wife (Laura Fraser, A KNIGHT'S TALE), a fellow avid cyclist (Billy Boyd, THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING), and a friend (Brian Cox, RUNNING WITH SCISSORS) all join him in his quest. Though his opponent's bike boasts $500,000 in engineering, Graeme builds his from scratch, even dismantling a washing machine to make the perfect bike. In addition to his lack of a designer cycle, Graeme also struggles with a mental illness that makes it difficult for him to get out of bed, much less try for a world record. But despite his troubles, Graeme is stubborn and driven, and Miller ably captures the zeal of the real-life athlete. Cox may be best known as a villain in films such as X2, but it's fascinating to see him play such a sympathetic character here. For those who love sports movies (or even just dramas in general), THE FLYING SCOTSMAN begs comparison to CHARIOTS OF FIRE. For most people, cycling doesn't hold the thrill of the typical spectator sports such as basketball or baseball, and one might assume that extends to the movie as well. But thanks to its strong characters and the novelty of a film about cycling, THE FLYING SCOTSMAN deserves a look. It could have benefited from developing the mental illness aspect of the plot, but it still adds an interesting element to what would've been a standard film.

  • I liked it. Sure it's a sports film. Enjoyable.

I liked it. Sure it's a sports film about making the grade, but interesting relationships develop along the way. Enjoyable. I liked that they dealt with the mental issues of the lead character. Watchable. Blessings, Max Rainet A film lover for life.

  • Good Cycling Movie

Cycling is a vigorous sport and you need to be tenacious at it like Graeme Obree was. Good story. Sad that it had to include the F words so many times. Truly no need for that. Jonny Lee Miller gave a fine performance as Obree. The Scottish brogue was heavy at times making it difficult to catch all the dialog being spoken. The wife of Graeme must have been some woman to stand by her man the way she did. A good testimony to a fine wife.

  • If you love cycling and hate bullies you will love this movie!

Loved it. Hard core cycling and life at the same time! I suffer from depression also so it was very real to me. The acting was good, the story great. If you love to ride till your head is clear or know some one that pushes themselves to the edge you will learn a lot from this movie. See this movie! MORE THAN ONCE

  • Passion of cycling and desire to push yourself

This is an intriguing story given the nature of current struggles we see with cycling governing bodies all at odds with each other. I guess some things don't change. Based on a true story of an inventor, cyclist and world record holder. Also shows a dark side of a character that may not have been as good as he was without having that dark side. Enjoyed the movie.

  • A Great Inspiration to Cycling !!!

As a new road cyclist, this movie is an honest inspirational based-from-a-true-story of a world famous professional cyclist. Problems and Obstacles against the Cycling Organization are true-to-life even for today's referrals. I have seen it 3 times since I got this DVD, and will watch again in the near future. A must for any cyclist. Recommended.
