About this product

Product Information

Hollywood's most celebrated luminaries--behind the camera as well as in front of it--combined talents to present this epic tale of the development of the American West from the 1830s through the Civil War to the end of the century, as seen through the eyes of one pioneer family. The film, divided into three chapters--"The Civil War" (directed by John Ford), "The Railroad" (directed by George Marshall), and "The River, the Plains, the Outlaws" (directed by Henry Hathaway)--tells the story of the Prescotts, a spirited group of easterners who make a declaration to migrate west. When their parents are lost in a tragic river accident, Eve (Carroll Baker) and Lilith (Debbie Reynolds) go their separate ways. Eve remains on the land that took her parents, settling down with the well-intentioned Linus Rawlings (James Stewart), while Lilith becomes a singer who is courted by the conniving Cleve Van Valen (Gregory Peck) when he learns that she has inherited a fortune in California. As time passes and the Civil War takes the life of Linus, the newest generation of Prescott offspring struggles with even greater danger and loss, in the form of fierce Indians as well as family archrivals. Top-notch production values and an endless string of solid performances have earned HOW THE WEST WAS WON the well-deserved label as one of Hollywood's most revered classics.

Phenomenal seller! This seller makes me feel proud to have some German blood coursing through my veins. I received this package before I received two others coming from other states and I ordered this after those two items! Extremely fast out of country shipping and packaged very securely. Great communication and very helpful in everything. Great prices on extremely rare items! All the positive qualities you could ask for in a great seller and a perfect buying experience! HPR!

Terrific transaction. Communication was good, shipped right away, arrived ahead of time well protected but not in an unnecessarily large or cumbersome box. Great condition, and the film looks and sounds great. Better service than I get from some in the US! Very grateful to have gotten this film for reasonable pricing that didn’t absolutely kill my bank account. Thanks very much!

    The title explains the content.

A DVD that is well-worth buying....especially for the bonus disc covering the invention of Cinerama. The various roles portrayed are well-acted by the numerous players. It is a very good chance to see multiple former Hollywood-greats in one film.Of course, there will be detractors who will take exception to how various sections of the film are presented or portrayed.....no presentation of any historical film will satisfy everyone. The criticism of the quality of the DVD is unwarranted.Viewing the material should be the prime purpose of the exercise....not nitpicking the technical shortcomings of a 50 + year-old production.

Entertaining but the quality of the DVD was poor.

The quality of the DVD was poor. The movie itself was entertaining. I bought it because I wanted to see some old-time actors and get a flavor for how difficult it was for early settlers in the U.S. I was going to give the DVD to my great-nephew -- he loves old-time movies -- but the quality was just too poor for gift-giving.
