Reviews
"Tom Brokaw has delivered a gift to this and future generations by bringing us these inspiring personal stories of the average Joes, the GI Joes, the young men and women who served our country and shaped the foundation of post-war America. Although some became famous, most returned to their hometowns dedicated to building an even better world. We meet them in this book, whose pages give voice to the standards they set by their strength of character, informed by their experience during World War II. Tom has held up a mirror to reflect what may be their greatest legacy and pose in all of us the question--Is this generation--our generation--worthy as their beneficiaries?" --Steven Spielberg

  • Wonderful book a must read about a Great Generation

It is a well thought out book. It tell the stories of a great, if not the Greatest generation, this country has ever produced. My father was one of those people. He spent more than 4 years fighting in the Pacific. He drove a Higging boat on the invasions. He received several medals and the purple heart with clusters. He was a product of the great depression as were virtually all these veterans. They served with pride and never complained or whined. We had several family members who died in both theaters. Yes this is a book that was very much needed. Also keep in mind they not only survived the depression, a world war, but came home and transformed the United States from a depressed nation to the greatest power in the world.

  • The Greatest Generation by Tom Brokaw (1998)

Weaving a wonderful story is always easier when you have good material and that is exactly what Mr. Brokaw collected before he wrote this volume. It is a great read and very thought provoking for any of us in the 40+ time of life. We owe a great debt to the men and women of this generation for their unselfish faith and pride in the United States of America. It influenced their decision to serve and they often sacrifice their lives for the freedom we enjoy today. Their generation offered the rest of our country many new beginnings, the book reminds us of the stories and helps us to be grateful. The book is a good reminder of the stories that remind us that freedom is not free and forgetting their lives would be a great tragedy. • The Greatest Generation by Tom Brokaw

I bought this book for a friend of my dad's for Christmas. He is a WWII vet (as is my father) and had never read it. I read it myself before 9/11 and what stuck with me most was the theme of patriotism that ran throughout the book. It is a truely inspiring book and a must read for all. I have recommended this book to many of my friends. It is filled with short stories about the men and women who served our country and came home to pick up where they left off. They sacrificed so much and wanted nothing in return. I gained a new-found respect for my dad after reading this book. THIS is the sort of reading that should be required for high school students. They would learn more from this than other books I've seen assigned. I'm thankful for a book such as this as this generation is ...

  • We Owe the Brave

This book should be required reading in every high school in America. Perhaps then the youth of today could appreciate what they have been given, instead of destroying it. You can learn from this book a lot about the unselfish sacrifice so freely given for the "taken for granted" freedom we have in America. Land of the Free because of the Brave.
