About this product

Product Information

The year is 1975; the Vigilantes and Coyotes, two rival gangs, are furiously trying to destroy one another. An unknown source has looted a top-secret military base and generously supplied each gang with an Army load of weaponry and firepower. The weapons are so extreme that by the time the feud is over, the Southwest will have been reduced to a pile of rubble and burning ash.

Choosing a character from either gang, the player then sets off on a quest to destroy his or her rivals. There are 12 characters in all (including four who are locked) including Chassey Blue and her '67 Rattler, hustler John Torque and his '69 Jefferson complete with a bass sound-system (the Bass Quake), and a former alien test pilot named Loki, who drives a missile toting `73 Glenn 4x4.

Like the Twisted Metal series, Vigilante 8 is a vehicular shooter combined with muscle cars, special weapons and pickups, and fully destructible arena-based levels. There are eight arenas in all ranging from a ski resort to a Las Vegas-like casino city. During the course of battle, buildings, fences, and landmarks can be annihilated; by doing so, secret places or items may be accessible.

There are few gameplay options including the one-player Quest and Arcade modes and the two-player Versus and Cooperative options. In the Arcade mode, the player will select their character, an arena, and the opponents that will be destroyed. This is a no-frills shoot-'em-up deathmatch. The Quest, on the other hand, is a bit different -- it is a four-level story mode for each character. As players progress throughout the Quest mode, more and more opponents come into the battle; the first level matches you up with one, the second level with two, etc. Depending on how many times you've finished the Quest with different characters, new arenas and drivers will become unlocked.

The two-player modes are played via split screen (option for horizontal or vertical). Versus is a simple deathmatch while the Cooperative mode is joint effort against computer-controlled opponents. Like the one-player's Arcade mode, players choose which arena they'd like to battle it out in and their drivers.

Vigilante 8 supports the Dual Shock Analog Controller and a Memory Card to save your game. This saves completed Quest modes as well as unlocked characters and arenas.

If you you're a fan of Twisted Metal try this

Vigilante 8 is a car combat game that is very similar to Twisted Metal but still feels like a different game. The vehicles in this game actually feel like they have weight to them and in general feels much more playable then TM 1 or 2 both physics wise and weapons wise. The stages are also really fun too with secret areas to discover full of helpful pickups and while not being as destructive as Twisted Metal still have unique layouts and structures in them that make them memorable. Also the game has an amazing menu theme. In some ways I'd say this game is actually better then most Twisted Metal games out there so if you're a huge fan of the TM franchise then I definitely recommend giving this game a shot.

  • Excellent classic PS1 game

Wonderful nostalgic feel that will surely bring back memories of the good old days. Various car with unique special abilities to choose from. Assortment of weaponry that can be utilized in many different way to gain an advantage over your opponents. Large maps with destructible environments. Coop modes and versus. Campaign mode. Only downfall is that the campaign is not 2 player coop. Unlock-able characters/vehicles and extra maps.

  • V8 Transends all systems and games system period! just an incredible game with a good cheat code system to enjoy the game to the fullest fast!

The seller sold me an excellent quality V8! This is hands down one of the best PS1 games ever! Sound, game engine and realistic physics, and funky music put it over the top!

  • This was a great purchase. 👍

This was a great purchase. When we got it and tried to boot it up it wouldn't play. So we ran the disc cleaner. It still didn't work until we rebooted it four times. Since then it's booted up perfect every time. It's a great game and we are enjoying having it. I only paid $9 for it and so it didn't come with the original case or the booklet. But I was willing to sacrifice that for such a great price.

  • Great game

I remember having the demo back in the day and I forgot how much fun it was playing this game. This is a great game to have if you like racing, and destroying things and like challenges.
