About this product

Product Information

Joe McNally, one of the world's top pro digital photographers, whose celebrated work has graced the pages of Sports Illustrated, Time, and National Geographic (to name a few), breaks new ground by doing something no photography book has ever done--blending the rich, stunning images and elegant layout of a coffee-table book with the invaluable training, no-nonsense insights, and photography secrets usually found only in those rare, best-of-breed educational books. When Joe's not on assignment for the biggest-name magazines and Fortune 500 clients, he's in the classroom teaching location lighting, environmental portraiture, and how to "get the shot" at workshops around the world. These on-location workshops are usually reserved for a handful of photographers each year, but now you can learn the same techniques that Joe shares in his seminars and lectures in a book that brings Joe's sessions to life.

  • Top critical review

Excellent book if you are interested in portrait photography

I bought this book because some very good reviews and it was recommended by Scott Kelby in his book "The digital photography". This book is aimed to experienced photography with a special interest in portrait photography. The book is filled with beautiful pictures and for most of them there is a brief description on how the picture was shot. This description explains where the lights were placed, but in many instances it is difficult to image the studio or environment set up because there is no picture/graphic demonstrating the technique used. The author uses a lot of technical language and, although there are often footnotes explaining the terminology used within the text, it can be difficult to understand for not photographer without "any studio experience". In summary recommended only ...

  • Very good Text

Very good advice and insight into technique, Several place I would like to see a bit more technical data but overall I think I will keep in on the shelf for a reference guide, I think if you took the examples and repeated the technique and obtained a similar shot the text would mean more. But there is insight on how to solve problems and hopefully some will rub off and I can change my way of thinking. I would recommend this book to someone who already owns a good DSLR and 1 or more strobes. Your expected to know your basics before you pick up this book. This book is about what it takes to get "The" picture for yourself or for a client. Some "out of the box" thinking that adds the extra punch to a photo or saves a somewhat impossible shoot.

  • The Moment It Clicks

The Moment It Clicks by Joe McNally is more of an inspirational account of the many years that Joe McNally has dedicated his life to his art/photography, than a technical book on making pictures. Overall, Joe describes how general photographic assignments become ever changing and he informs the reader how each situation is over come with improvisation and the insight of what the end result should look. Nevertheless, there appears to be an underlining theme that Joe attempts to convey and that is of his personal sacrifices that he has choosen for his career. If a person is looking for a technical book on photography, they may be disappointed; however, if you need artist inspiration I do not know of a book that would be better from recent prints.

  • GREAT BOOK ON PHOTOGRAPHY, WITH HOW I TOOK THE PICTURE.

I HAVE TWO BOOKS BY SCOTT KELBY ON DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY AND I LOVED THEM BOTH. SCOTT RECOMMENED THIS BOOK AND I REALLY LIKE THE BOOK. JOE MCNALLY TELLS YOU HOW HE TOOK EACH PICTURE AND THE PICTURES ARE BEAUTIFUL. THIS BOOK GIVES YOU INSIGHT INTO HOW TO TAKE BETTER PICTURES AND WHAT IS NEEDED TO DO SO. SOME OF THE EQUIPMENT JOE TALKS ABOUT MIGHT BE A LITTLE TO MUCH FOR MOST PHOTOGRAPHERS TO BUY, BUT IF YOU WANT THE RESULTS THAT HE GETS YOU HAVE TO HAVE THE EQUIPMENT. THE BOOK IS GREAT JUST FOR THE PICTURES THAT ARE IN IT. THE MOMENT IT CLICKS IS A GOOD PHOTOGRAPHY BOOK TO OWN.
