    Tunes of Glory DVD

The supplemental interviews of TofG were informative. I didn't realize that the lead role casting had been mulled over, reversing the Col. Barrows and Col. Sinclair roles, i.e., Alec Guinness playing Col. Barrows and his nemesis being John Mills. (To me, that would have been a stretch.)

  • TUNES OF GLORY Criterion Collection Special Edition DVD

This is a great movie. The time: immediately following the Second World War. The place: Scotland, specifically the Scots Highland Regiment. The Regiment has returned from hard combat in North Africa and Europe, and once again is ensconced in its barracks in the Scottish Highlands--the place in which it has been headquartered for over three hundred years. The Acting Commanding Officer is Col. Jock Sinclair (Alec Guinness), a rough, uneducated man from the lower classes who worked his way up to Colonel from the ranks. Sinclair got his promotion in the desert, fighting Rommel, and one senses that these experiences have created strong bonds of friendship between Sinclair and certain other officers in the battalion. Now higher headquarters has assigned a new Commanding Officer to the ...

  • Sir Alec Guiness in one of his finest roles

Sir Alec Guiness as a hard drinking, former piper, acting as commander of a Scottish Regiment. His replacement, portrayed by John Mills, is a British aristocrat who clashes with his new subordinate, leading to a final conclusion that can't be anticipated. The story and acting is fantastic. Pipers should ignore the obviousness of the fact that the actors playing pipers are not actually piping. That notwithstanding, the music is great.

  • Alec Guinness and John Mills at their peak.

A wonderful film I have not seen in 20 years and it still holds up! Alec Guinness and John Mills are wonderful. Really interesting take on the British upperclass vs. lowerclass system. Susannah York's first film and she glows with talent. You will recognize many great English actors playing secondary roles - Dennis Price, Gordon Jackson (Mr. Hudson from "Upstairs/Downstairs")and if you like the sound of bagpipes, you will be in 7th heaven.

  • The war before Star Wars!

The war before Star Wars! It is one of Alec Guinness best movies before Star Wars! Great movie a must-see.
