Ghost Recon Gold Edition
First off, this isn't the average shooter you pull off the shelf at a store. This is a one-hit-kills slow paced tactical shooter where you play the role of a special forces team, and if you go in guns blazing, expect a quick death. Missions take place on huge, open ended maps where you are given several objectives. You are always vastly outnumbered, so stealth, superiority, and good tactics are key. Squad command isn't done on the fly like most squad based shooters today. Instead, a tactical map is used. This slows down the pace a little, but gives you more freedom with your squad. From the map, you set up waypoints, firing arcs, movement and engagement rules. Want to send a team across the map to hit a camp from both sides? Just set down a few waypoints and set your men to recon. ... First off, this isn't the average shooter you pull off the shelf at a store. If that's not enough, you can "jump" into another soldiers body at any time and control them directly. AI isn't great but isn't bad either. Your teammates don't always take cover right away, although enough fire will send to behind cover or make them go prone. However, they are great at spotting enemies. I recommend having a team take point on recon before you get used to picking out camo'd Russians through the trees and bushes. Don't worry - you become very good at it over time. The enemies are also fairly skilled. Their first reaction to fire is to get cover or shot back immediately. From there, they will often try to keep your head down with a large volume of fire while advancing, even if they don't know your exact position. There are several character classes to choose from: rifleman, sniper, support, and demolitions. Each class chooses from different kits of weapons and has a slightly different appearance. There is an option to name your squad in campaign, so you can have teams named after your friends (or enemies for whatever reason). The graphics are somewhat outdated today, but are enough to immerse you in the game. Sounds add realism as well. I especially enjoyed the sounds of bullets whizzing by, birds chirping, or the thunk projectiles make as they hit a tree in front of you. If you're into tactical or realistic military shooters, I highly recommend this game. With it being offered at only a few bucks now, there is little excuse not to pick it up. The difficulty is high, and you'll sweat so much from the tension that your mouse may slip out of your fingers. Overall a great game.

Quite simply, this is a great game. Unlike most first-person shooters, this is a one-shot-and-you're-dead game. There are no magical health bonuses hidden around the game to restore your health. Fortunately, you can hop between players in your squads. Gameplay can be very intense, even playing against the computer. You must coordinate your squads carefully in order to achieve the objectives. The campaign modes are nice as your team's abilities steadily improve, at least as long as they stay alive. Multiplayer also works well, and includes a co-op mode in case you and your buddies want to fight the computer. The two expansions (Island Thunder and Desert Seige) add new maps and new missions, but don't really add much beyond that. Still, it's nice to have more maps to pick from for ... This game is good and it is a challenge.
What I like - it is a real challenge because you have to complete the mission without any fatalities on your team. If you don't you may have a problem completing your campaign because you will need those members later. The other challenge is you have 3 squads that you have to control to do different aspects of each mission. They have to actually complete those and not get killed. I also like this sim because it is based on today's Army rather than WWII. The only problem with this program is the difficulty in adding the different add on missions without copying over the original set of missions so you can also play them. There is a fix for this I got from the support website but I haven't had time to try it. A game play con is that sometimes your other team mates do things that get them ... Maybe I should modify the title of this review a bit, just to be politically correct... or something. Buy this game if you're over twelve. It is fairly violent, hence the M rating. However, once past an impressionable age, it is a must-have. Of the numerous Ghost Recon titles out there, this package represents the best of the lot. You get the original Ghost Recon (which is definitely the best one on the market... even better than the recent GRAW and GRAW2 releases), all of the patches for it, and both mission packs. This is a must-have game. While the newer ones might have fancier graphics and make use of HDR lighting, realistic particle effects and all that other stuff, this game beats them by miles in terms of background story. Most computers you buy now will run the game with everything tunred up to full, and at such levels it is hard to complain about looks. If I had any complaints on graphics at all, they would be on some cheesy three-second cut-scenes... cg explosions were hard to create back when this game came out. But it makes little difference, and anyone who likes a good army game will forgive these small disappointments. Oh, and have I mentioned that it is an ACTUAL squad-based game? Most newer "squad-based" games are dumbed-down versions. I laugh at games like Republic Commando and GRAW which claim to revolutionary squad-based games. In the original Ghost Recon, you can position your troops anywhere and set even more actions for them than in GRAW... though the AI can prove a bit lacking at times... But you're teammates are much more skilled, which makes up a few ridiculous moves you might see them make. I like the command map system better too. I guess that people who keep up with modern warfare could validly complain that some of the weapons technology in these games is dated. That's true, but its not like you're using a single-shot musket. Anyways, I may have gotten a little carried away here. My point is, buy this game and you'll be happy. This game is great and fun to play if you have the time
Ghost Recon is an exciting entertaining game , however you need time to play the game, at least 1/2 hour for each mission. You must find the ememy, they do not come to you. It may take 5 to 10 minutes from the start of the game before any ememy is seen. If you are looking for an arcade style shoot up game, this game is not for you.
