This machine is a good quality machine. We took in to get serviced. The thread still breaks when in the zig zag backwards motion. But, otherwise works good. The service man said it was very clean. He thought a new bobbin case would take care of the problem. It helped, but did not completely solve the thread breaking. The service man said this is the best model for Bernina.

Hands down the BEST mechanical machine available!
There was a small crack in the machine body that may have happened in shipping. They noticed it when I had it serviced. Even so, it works wonderfully. I'm so excited to have a Bernina 1008. I think it is hands-down the BEST mechanical machine on the market. This machine has several different stitches, an easy buttonhole setting and an EXCELLENT tight stitch. I've used a 1008 on leather, sequins, chiffon, knits...all with no problem. There are lots of different feet available for zippers, blind hems, rolled hems, buttonholes and quilting to name a few. When undergraduate students do their best to mess it up, this machine is easy to put back into order, usually by just re-threading it properly. Nothing sews like a Bernina, including this one.
My Bernina 1008 has a great stitch and seems to adjust the tension to whatever I am sewing - typical Bernina quality here. It is very easy to use-just sit down and go. It is a basic machine and as such functions well. I have had two issues with it. First the foot pedal didn't immediately start the machine and then all of a sudden it took off and only operated at race horse speed. I ordered a new solid state foot pedal and this problem has disappeared. The machine is built sturdily except for the on/off switch. This is a thin, flimsy piece of plastic that I don't like at all. Another minor issue is finding snap on presser feet. Mine came with only the general sewing foot. If you don't buy them from a Bernina dealer, they may or may not fit. I bought several that fit ... I bought several that fit on the shank that came with the machine but the needle hit the back of the presser foot instead of the hole for the needle. I did find a set that fit. The other thing that bothered me is that when you see it advertised nobody mentions that this machine is not made in Switzerland as most Berninas are. It is made in the Far East. This may not be a bad thing but, face it, made in Switzerland products overall trump, hands down, products made in the Far East. If a Bernina is not made in Switzerland, I expect to be told this without having to find out by seeing it on the product label. I gave this machine a 4 rating because it sews really well, and I guess that is basically what one wants in a sewing machine.

Love mechanical Bernina machines.
One of the best machines Bernina ever made, next to the 830 Record. I love a good mechanical machine. Easy to sew with, never breaks. All you have to do is get it serviced and it will last for years and years. Bernina stopped making mechanical machines (big mistake) so when I can get a good used one, I'm thrilled. This machine was lin very good condition and at a great price. Worth every penny. Not the lightest machine, but I think heavier ones sew better, they don't bounce around when sewing. One of the best machines Bernina ever made, next to the 830 Record. I love a good mechanical machine. Easy to sew with, never breaks. A Workhorse- Great Machine
This is a discontinued model but the machine used at my daughter’s art school and the one they still recommend. I can see why. It’s a workhorse but quiet and easy to use. My daughter (21) loves it. Great buy!
