  • Massie's Grand Tours of Russia Truly Sparkle

Robert K. Massie is the reigning dean of Russian imperial history, one of the very best historical writers on the 20th and 21st centuries. His books are brilliantly researched, wonderfully well organized, and astonishingly well written. "The Final Chapter" is comprehensive and exhaustive as a follow-up to his "Nicholas and Alexandra" and "The Romanovs", which really are truly definitive. In all of them the original historical research and brilliant writing style truly shine. Still, my favorites among his books are "Catherine the Great" and especially "Peter the Great" — which, like his books on the Romanovs (and even more so) pay close attention to the smaller and more personal aspects of his subjects' interests and priorities, such as Catherine's correspondence with and charity to leading ...

  • Great book; tells a true story without any fandangling whatsoever.

This book is undoubtedly the best book on the market detailing the sad end of the Romanovs, including the two parents and all five children. It is not a pretty picture, but far better to know what and how it happened than to simply "wonder" about it. My personal feeling is that Nicholas Romanov might have avoided such a horrific ending if he'd been a little bit more resolute about getting his family OUT of Russia before such an ending came along. But on the other hand, he had a LOT of pressure to simply try to stay in Russia and remain at least the symbolic leader of the country. But, as we now know, nobody ever gets what they want out of communism . . . especially a symbolic leader like Nicholas. Also, Robert Massie is an outstanding historian and has written several outstanding books.

  • Fascinating Book.

This is an excellent and painstakingly written book by a master historian. His attention to detail is exquisite. You MUST read his Nicholas & Alexandra to truly understand the tragedy of what took place during the Russian revolution. He tells the story without any bias, and shows the people he writes of with all of their flaws and redeeming qualities. This book opens with a shocking chapter. The rest of the book is about all of the petty fighting that went on trying to verify the remains of the Tsar's family and then goes on to tell about all the pretenders to the Romanovs and the difficulties in proving and disproving who they were. Amazing.

  • Not about a family but a dynasty ,

  • More people should know about this historian

I have not read this book yet. I purchased it as a gift for someone who read another book by Robert Massie and loved it. Robert Massie is one of the best historians of our time. I have read his Peter the Great, a fascinating book about the monarch and about Russia itself. Massie writes beautiful English, he is fair to his subjects, he knows how to explain how people in different times and different countries thought and acted, without either denigrating or glorifying them. Anyone who is interested in history or who would like to get a good picture of a different time or a different culture could not do better than read Massie.
