They don't make them like this anymore.

Fans familiar with the more current dub of the original (pre Z) Dragonball would be surprised to learn that there was a previous attempt to dub the show in the mid 90's. Produced by BLT and Funimation, and voiced by the Ocean Group, the first 13 episodes of Dragonball were run as a syndication package, and as such tended to air at funny time slots depending on the broadcast channel. To say the episodes are edited would be an understatement, but as a syndicated show, the restrictions were actually far looser than the DBZ dub it came before (think the 90s Iron Man cartoon compared to the Spider-man cartoon from the same time). This collection serves as something of a time capsule, from before anime could be shown on TV mostly faithfully, and a reminder of how far it's come. There's a lot ...

  • The Saga of Goku and Curse of the Blood Rubies

If you want to know the beginning of young Goku, this is one good place to start. Of course there is another feature regarding Goku's father and where Goku is coming from, but that is another supplement story. There are several versions of saga regarding the young Goku. Pretty much the same characters except the storylines lead to different adventures and endings. One thing for sure is the original japanese version is more juicy. This version has edited the juicy part and refined the translation so it is more suitable for young kids. I am more interested at the full length feature - the Curse of Blood Rubies. It is another version how Goku and Bulma meet. They pursue the dragon balls which lead to the bad guys. There are many japanese animations out there. Some may think dragon ...

  • Dragonball

A little research will tell you that this version is the 'made for the US consumer market' version. The original Japanese version has Goku naked and Master Roshi come across as a 'dirty old man.' This version was modified to have Goku wear underwear and Master Roshi much more docile and less sexual. Even the 'head underwear' that Oolong wishes for is changed to have a dragon on it instead of bow ties. The overall story, however, of looking for Dragon balls for the ultimate wish is basically the same. Hard core Dragon Ballers will not appreciate this version as much as the 'uncut' version that Funimation later made (which is also modified), but otherwise it's an enjoyable, entertaining, child friendly version.

  • Make it unedited please!

I owned this at one time then sold it. Then decided later on that I wanted to rebuy it for collection purposes. As a hardcore Dragon Ball and Z fan I was disappointed with this. Mainly because it's edited and it just completely cuts out some of the best scenes and master roshi pretty well has no personality on edited. They have released ALL the other Dragon Ball box sets unedited but not the first set, I never really understood it. They should make this unedited for adults who don't want the kiddy crap. Anyways since its the only alternative it's alright. And it comes with a movie (also edited)

  • Love Dragonball!!!

What a great season, I missed this show so much that I had to buy it. Instead of the constant waiting, and taking forever to get on with one fighting move, like in DBZ, Dragonball is the adventure show that cartoons/anime used to be all about. It's not the original sadly, and the only reason I am giving this a 4 star is because the movie that comes with it is almost identical to the first few episodes of the show. All in all, BUY IT!
