Based loosely on the influential, 11th century romantic novel The Tale of Genji, Genji: Dawn of the Samurai is a combat-focused adventure set in a feudal Japan rife with magic and mystery. Players alternate between control of two lead characters: the young, lithe Yoshitsune, who wields twin samurai blades, and the grizzled, burly Benkei, who fights with an enormous club. Success in battle allows players to gradually upgrade their characters' skills. The game's story leads them on a journey of discovery and honor, through a foreign land where they are often met with distrust and aggression. <br><br>Camera angles are fixed, and combat involves superhuman leaps, fast-paced swordsmanship, and intricate combos, as in contemporary action-adventure titles such as Devil May Cry or Otogi. Genji: Dawn of the Samurai is the first release from Game Republic, the studio founded by former Capcom designer and producer Yoshiki Okamoto. Although Genji's dreamy wilderness environments and fluent graphics may set it apart from its predecessors, similarities to Capcom's successful Onimusha games are also apparent.

Game is great combat Venn be repetitive at times but it is unique in the same aspect, graphics are good too for its tune and the 2 main characters make for a refreshing adventure throughout the game

Pros + Lots of fighting with plenty of boss battles mixed in. + Fast moving, athletic character. + Lots of style & a compelling story. Cons - Too much button mashing & searching for upgrades is a chore. - Without the powers & unique bosses the game is pretty much cookie cutter. - Too much dialogue & lots of useless cutscenes that break up the gameplay. - Limited save points. Comments This game is some fun to play around with. Camera angles are often frustrating & searching for upgrades is not much fun. But the fast paced action should keep any fan of the action genre playing for at least a few hours. There are two characters playable and their styles are quite different. Hordes of bad guys attack at a time and you will slice your way through them like a champ. Just remember to use block ... This game is great for those of you whom enjoy action packed games. With two playable and switchable characters. Each one is better suited for one kind of player. One is for those of you whom enjoy smooth movement and combos. They other is for those whom enjoy just holding a big stick and smacking people with it. The sound and graphics on this game are wonderful. The replay value is kinda what keeps it from being a 5. With many weapons, armor choices, special items, and things to collect and do...this will keep a average gamer busy for around 10 hours. While some of us wouldnt pick up a game with only 10 hours of play, I would if I were you. You wont be disappointed. Genji: Dawn of the Samurai is one of the stand out games to be released on the PS2. It is headed to be recognized as a classic game that will stand on it own even against the games of today. It is somewhat similar in style to the Devil May Cry ganes, with elements of the Dynasty Warrior series, and elements of RPG leveling up. Genji: Dawn of the Samurai is a beautiful, and satisfying game with a dynamic battle system that uses motion capture to render authentic sword battles that get better and better as the game progresses and as you level up and collect Amahagane, a jewel that enables you to accesss new power levels and Kamui moves. The fact that it is voice acted in Japanese, with subtitles makes this game all the better. The story is compelling, and immersive. The main character, ... When we look at what games were made for the PS2 with a focus on art, and with an amazing attention to detail, Genji: Dawn of the Samurai is going to stand out as on of the greats. If you don't own a copy of this game, and you love to play an immersive story, with beautiful graphics, dynamic and ultra-realistic sword battles, then grab the next copy of Genji that you can. It will become more and more hard to find as people rediscover what a great game Genji: Dawn of the Samurai was in it's time, and continues to be today.

To be honest, I thought I was buying a different game at first. And tried to retract my order. But the payment had already been recieved, so I decided to check the game out myself. Boy, am I glad I did. This is an incredible game with rich artistry and historic flavor. I think I bought a japanese version, because the game is subtitled. This actually adds to the enjoyment of the game. The story is very engaging, and keeps you on your toes. You play one of two fighters in old fuedal Japan, avenging the overthrow of their family. Each has their own individual strengths and weaknesses on how to procede throught each chapter of the story.The combat system is based on a timing criterium.
