"The Andromeda Strain", a Michael Crichton story expertly brought to film by ace director Robert Wise, is everything a good science fiction story should be-frightening, fascinating, mysterious, and engrossing, without violence or CGI effects. This tale of an alien microbe brought back to Earth by a top-secret space satellite, which incidentally was DESIGNED to do just that for possible use in germ warfare, is still a thrilling edge of your seat nail-biter 43 years after it was produced. With its 6-million-dollar-plus budget (a small sum by today's standards), The Andromeda Strain gets high marks for scientific accuracy, using state-of-the-art (for 1971, at least) computer and research equipment, some of which is still used today. The drama unfolds when the satellite returns to earth in a ... The alien bug it brings back kills everyone in the town except an old drunk and a small, crying baby, also killing the Air Force team sent to retrieve it. A crack team of scientists, assembled for such an emergency, is called in to bring the satellite to a secret underground high-tech laboratory in the Nevada desert to find out- 1. what is the nature of the organism, 2. how does it spread, 3. why did the drunk and the infant live, and 4. how to stop it. A group of nearly-unknown actors (Arthur Hill, David Wayne, Kate Reid, and James Olson) bring the story to life perhaps better than "big name" celebrities would have. The logical, scientific methodology used in studying the deadly germ is very realistic and plausible. If you haven't seen this old sci-fi gem, do yourself a favor and grab a copy on eBay. I still love this movie after seeing it 20 times...it's a real thriller.

Sci fi classic that's very believable, not far-fetched, especially considering that this flick was made during the Apollo lunar landings. I think four of the six landings had been completed at the time, and people were still nervous. Us old farts still remember it all :)
